Default Thermostat problems

I think my thermostat is supposed to be running 192-195deg F i have a 91 crx hf with a d16y7 in it. But my thermostat is running 170-180deg F. It is running rich and getting bad mpg and a mechanic i know said people put lower temp thermostats in these cars so they run open loop all the time for performance reasons. So what temp should I be running? And how do I know what thermostat to replace it with? Also my temp gauge is not in the middle it is below it.

1996–2000 Honda Civic

Use a thermostat from one of these. Preferably a new one from a parts store or online.
