So i took off my stock head to install a head a friend gave me with after market valve train.
When I removed my head, all off the valves were shut.

His head has Exhaust valves on Cylinder 2 slightly open, and Intake valves on cylinder 3 slighty open.


How is this going to work out when I put the head on? How will I need to fix the timing? When I removed my head, cylinder 1 was at TDC


Is something wrong with the head he gave me? He said it was running when he took it off. He went B-series so had no need for it

set the head you'r friend gave you at TDC(turn the cam gear to "up")then put it on.

How do I turn the cam gear, it is super hard to turn.....I cant turn it by hand thats for sure......

Looking at his cam gear and mine, they both have the UP label and the two side marks at about the same locations...which gives me the indication that he would have taken the head off with his block being at TDC......

I know I can turn the cam by hooking it up to the timing belt, but how would I know that the valves are closed

 

Can't turn it by hand ? try wearing gloves i cut my hand once trying to turn my cam gears(DOHC engine). then i wore a glove and it worked. It doesn't matter if the bottom was set at tdc when the head was takenoff. If im taking the head off for what ever reason i set tdc(for bottom end) when the head is off. so that's not you'r problem the only thing i can think of is the valve seats are worn out giving the impression that they are open can you post a pic ?

 

I will try to post pictures tomorrow.....all the valvetrain is still in the head, I dont see how I can turn the cam gear easily.....i even looked it up, and people say it is hard to do.....

put a 12mm socket and ratchet and tightening the bolt. set the head on its side and turn it over or on its side. NEVER let the valves or bottom of the head lay on a hard surface it could bend valves.

 

Your over thinking this all just set it to tdc and put it on

Put the head on, crank it with a 1/2" drive ratchet until its at TDC, set the timing belt and tensioner... done

 

Ok, thanks for all the help.....so I was able to turn the cam, I went around a couple of times but at no point in time was I able to close all the valves completely......

Maybe a bent valve?

The closest to having the valves all closed is at the point where it was originally.....but again, Exhaust valves on Cylinder 2 slightly open, and Intake valves on cylinder 3 slighty open.

any other thoughts? Is it a big deal if the valves dont completely close?

 

they're not supposed to all be closed at the same time. your engine wouldn't run if it did.

set your cam to TDC on #1 and keep going.

 

alright, so TDC on #1 on the head means it is completely shut then right?

 

or better question, which valves should be open at TDC for cyl 1 for a D16Z6 head

 

look at you'r other head and judge it of that unless you want to pull the cam gurdle...

 

If all the valves were closed your motor cant get any air and wouldn't start/run

 

On any D SERIES heads it will never ever have closed valves these aren't like b series if its at tdc I think cyl #1 and #3 or 4 should have two valves open on each cyl don't worry about it as long as the valves are good including seals especially guides u shouldn't have no issues at all put the bottom and top at at TDC an put timing on make sure tension is pretty tight not to tight just firm and install everything else and VROOOOOOOMMMMMMM Lol
