Shorter-ish geared D series trans question
i have a 96 ex coupe. (s40 trans)
i have an s20 sitting in my basement waiting to be put in my car.
before i do that however i am curious to see if i can do the following:
take the 4th gear and final drive out of a 7th gen (2002 EX)
the gear ratios are:
mine:
3.250 1st
1.909 2nd
1.250 3rd
0.909 4th
0.702 5th
4.250 final drive
the 2002 ex:
3.143 1st
1.870 2nd
1.241 3rd
0.970 4th
0.757 5th
4.412 final drive
1st - 3rd i don't want - but 4th, 5th, and the final drive are shorter.
i'm not looking for a huge difference here - my car is a daily.
however i want it to be just a little quicker.
so the question is:
can i swap these gears? will they fit?

Honestly, I don't know. I want to say no. I will say though that if you can find a '92 - '95 CX/VX trans you can use 3rd gear from that as a short 4th in an Si trans.
It's just 3rd and 4th you can do it with. The reason being they share a common sleeve and hub, and both halves of the gearset can be removed from the shafts. Besides the ratio 3rd and 4th are identical in their demensions. You could do the same thing with 1st and 2nd if the mainshaft gears weren't cast as part of the mainshaft itself. Not that it would really help you any, All '88 - '00 D-series transmissions use the same 1st gear so it's not like there was a long 1st gear you could use as short 2nd.

The third gearset is discontinued from Honda so you can't just go to your local dealership and order it anymore like you used to be able to.
sucks about the dealership - but that's how it is for a lot of stuff now with 90's honda...
i'll check, thanks so much man, time to get to work.
