DIY how to wire 90-91 defroster / dimmer switches
Id love to know how to wire up the 90-91 cluster switches, been searching for a week on doing a 90-91 cluster swap to my 89 Si
Ive got the cluster wiring pinned into the 90-91 spots, but the switches arent the same.
My 89 dimmer harness plug clicks into the 90-91 cluster plug no problem, just the wires are to short, but do the wires need to be repinned? I definetely need to extend them but the plug is the same atleast.
The defroster plug on my 89 wiring is completely different than the defrost switch on the 90-91 cluster, 3 wire VS 5 flat
Ive seen alot of threads where this was left unasnwerred so Id love to get it solved and keep a good record for others in the future
Appreciate any help!!

Dimmer is totally different and cant be interchanged. The 88-89 uses a built in relay and the 90-91 utilizes an external relay
They dont wire them to work. Ive done this swap multiple times. Due to the relay issue, the dimmer switches cant be interchanged unless youre up for extensive wiring. For a better option, put the 88-89 dimmer switch in one of the accessory locations that have block off plates in them.

Logic dictates that you would need the external relay from the donor car. If you can find the wiring diagrams, it'll help you also. It all starts with + and -, and it uses a "switch" to operate it. If the relay it external on the donor switch, swap the relay and the switch. The wiring between the donor relay & switch stays the same, and I can't imagine that the input wires (+, -, etc) are too hard to figure out??

Ok so for the dimmer if I just leave the 90-91 dimmer in the cluster cover and hide the factory 88-89 I guess I can swing that.
But what about the defroster. That plug can physically go in the 90-91 defroster but are the 3 wires still int he correct position or do I need to switch them around??
I know the hazard Im not wiring Im leaving the factory 88-89 column mounted one to function as stock

You can use a multimeter or testlight to determine the function of each wire on your stock switch, and also use the multimeter to determine the open/closed states of the new switch. From there, match up the three stock wires to the needed connection. You probably have a -, +, and I guess a wire directly related to the dashlighting?? Switches are easy but you must know your wires first...then hook up the switch to operate the wires.
CORRECTION: I am halfasleep and my mind blended your 2 paragraphs into 1 thought. Defrost switch may not have a wire directly related to dashboard lighting...possible though. I was honestly still thinking about that dimmer switch, when I read your question about the "3 wires." Same rules still apply. Take a multimeter or testlight to the 3 wires of your factory switch (while still hooked up)....figure out which ones have a constant + signal, a "switched" + signal (voltage present only when switch is on), and see if one has a - (ground) signal. Once you know your wires, hooking up the new switch should be alot easier.

The 90-91 switch I got that came with my cluster cover isnt marked though, So I dont know which colour should be doing to which
Wiring is not my thing, hence why I went with the supposedly simple 90-91 upgrade which was fairly plug and play over a gsr cluster or such
I just dont get how to wire the 3 oem defrost wires to the 90-91 switch. Because the factory 88-89 plug plugs right into the 90-91 switch I was to just plug it in and try it, but dont want to blow anything or make the switch useless, chances are the wires will need to be put in a different pin or something is what Im guessing

Sounds like you have it backwards. The 90-91 dimmer is a 3 wire and the defroster should be a 5 wire on the 88-89;5 wire on the 90-91 as well. Youll need to rewire it utilizing the 90-91 plug
Ya sorry, the factory 88-89 dimmer switch plug from the stock harness fits right into the 90-91 dimmer switch
Would the wires need to be swapped around??
