Default SRS/CC problem, horn fine

When I try to search for information on this issue, I keep coming up with the clock spring, but my horn is operating fine.

About 36 hours ago I noticed that my cruise control wasn't working - I replaced the brake switch about 7 months/4000 miles ago. The symptoms were similar to that situation - the CC system switch lights up as normal, and when I press the Set button, the CC indicator light comes on. When I release the accelerator, the car begins to coast slowly and the indicator goes out.

This evening, I went out on an errand and noticed that the SRS light didn't go out. I checked the fuses, and everything is fine. I plan on trying out the SRS paperclip reset tomorrow afternoon after work, so I don't know if there is an issue with the SRS. To be totally honest, the car is a 97 and I never took it in for Honda's 10y checkup - if the CC hadn't gone out at the same time, I would have taken it in without another thought.

So, like I said, I was wondering if the issues were related and noticed others mentioning the problem, and that the clock spring had failed. In those instances, the horn died too, but I just checked my horn (not the most neighborly thing to do at 9pm, I know) and it works. Like I said above, this one difference is killing my Google magic. Not a lot of useful hits come up with you exclude "horn" from your search.

Just wondering if anybody has any thoughts. Unless I get a consensus solution, I'll post the results of the SRS reset tomorrow evening.

Does the speedometer work? Any CEL codes?

CC: Sounds like a problem with the actuator.

SRS: Jump the service connector to pull the codes. There may be an airbag system problem.

Speedometer is fine and the CEL hasn't lit, so I'm guessing it hasn't thrown a code.

CC - From what I'm seeing looking around, it looks like a problem with the actuator wouldn't be a cheap fix (especially when you compare it to the value of a 97 Civic).

SRS - Can a code be pulled by the local auto shop, like the CEL, or do I need to go to the dealer? I'd imagine that SRS work in general can be done at any reasonably qualified shop, but I wasn't sure if I can bypass going to a mechanic altogether.

I was thinking about what might have caused this, and the only thing I could think of was that I replaced the hood release cable almost two weeks ago (2/15). If something was going to go wrong, I would have expected it to happen at the same time, but a slight delay wouldn't surprise me. We came down to Houston 7 months ago, and it's wreaking havoc on our cars.

No salted roads in Houston, and no other mysterious factors destroying cars that I'm aware of.

You can pull the codes using only a paper clip or short piece of wire. Click the Codes link in my signature.

Then reset the SRS computer (see Codes link) to see whether the SRS light remains off.

Look under the hood to see whether the cc actuator or vacuum hose are removed.

If everything is there and connected, check the cable adjustment.

I feel dumb, but this resolved the issue. I had the hood release cable replaced (long story) by what turned out to be an idiot (longer story), but it looks like the (and I now expose my ignorance) seal from the hose to the actuator was dislodged enough that it eventually gave out. I did the seal, but I'm wondering if there is anything else I need to do. I'll test it out later to make sure that it worked.

Just to confirm, from your guide, it looks like the service check connector is a free connector that isn't plugged in to a housing. Is that correct?

Also revealing my ignorance, where is the SRS Unit?
