Gas Cap and CEL
Hi, I have the 01 Accord with the V6 engine. I have had repeated engine light coming on. Each time I tighten down on the gas cap, the CEL clears after several engine cycles. the LAST time it happened (recently), I replace the gas cap with an OEM one,,,the CEL goes off. Yesterday, i got the CEL again..perhaps i did NOT tighten the gas cap down hard enough again.
BUT - my question is,,,with a NEW gas cap on there - what else could be causing this... the EGR thing, or the two 02 sensors? I need to get this fixed so I can pass my EPA vehicle test in Illinois. thx.

You need to identify the code that is being set in the computer when the CEL comes on. Some auto parts stores will hook up a code reader and pull it/them for you at no charge. You might want to clear all the codes first, just in case the first gas cap did clear a problem that was causing a code, and the code that keeps coming back is caused by something different.
Sorry, late in replying - I put on a new stealership gas cap. May have not screwed it on the last time I filled up. BUT - yesterday I went and found a have a 1457 code, not 1456. He cleared it, I haven't touched the gas cap and it came back this morning. From the web I'm learning that it could be (in this order) = Canister Vent Shut Valve and/or EVAP two-way Valve Solenoid. Any thoughts on this M.O. ?
Those are the usual suspects for a P1457, depending on where the car lives.....you might need the canister. Salt and that on the roads will rust the screws to the point where you can't get them out and or damage the canister when removing them.

Im in Chicago suburbs, the car has lived its entire 211k mile life here. I'll see how it progresses then go forward, thx, and I'll thread this back if I have any more questions.
Just to make others aware - i DID get the OEM cap from the dealer, am getting an intermittent 1457 now (let me make sure I'm twisting the gas cap on all the way in the next 2 fill-ups.

POORMAN212 - filled the tank yesterday, screwed the NEW OEM gas cap down tight.... got the CEL back. Haven't got the code yet...I will today just to confirm if its 1456 or 1457.
Ready to do the vent shut valve. I remember getting a good gush of air coming out of the fill pipe when I remove the gas cap. Stay tuned. Comments welcome. thx.

After all the trial and error you've done, this is probably a long shot, but, on some cars, overfilling the gas tank can cause CELs related to evap or emissions. Even letting the gas pump stop by itself can result in overfill. Some of the nozzles are poorly designed and the fuel level has to get way on up there (too far up) before hitting the sensor that stops the pump.
hmmm, interesting. i think this may be accurate, somewhat, in my situation. it does appear and go away, then come back upon opening and closing the cap/tank. Let me see if it goes away again in the next 2 or 3 days since my last fillup. I am on the verge of buying the vent shut valve parts - then this happened. I'll let you know if the CEL goes out by itself again.
I think I understand now that what people have been doing is stopping a gallon or so short of a full tank when refilling, which might keep the CEL from coming on but doesn't fix the problem, and also leaves them needing to fuel up more often. You're probably going to have to put power directly to that shut valve and listen for it click open and closed like it supposed to, and if you find that it's frozen open/shut or whatever, as poorman12 suggested previously; replace it and the canister. I don't know much of anything about 6th generation Accords, but just from a couple of Google searched, I can tell you have a lot of company with that P1457 code.
New help - cannot get the screws off the existing valve. Actually, can get to ONE of the screws, can't even get to the other (yet). I tried the spray and my needle nose vice grips..no luck. Then, removed two bolts to drop one side of the cannister but see the other bolt nearer the rear of the car,,,but its semi-blocked by the gas tank ?? or whatever is in the way. SHOULD I GET THAT BOLT OUT TO LOWER AND REMOVE the cannister ? or perceivere to get the valve off ? thx in advance.
