Honda Transmission Fluid
basically i want to change my Honda transmission fluid, i went to AutoZone and i told the guy i need a transmission fluid for a 93 stick shift Honda, and he give me this: http://www.castrol.com/castrol/secti...tentId=7028224
But it says automatic transmission, so i don't know if i can put this on my car,
I drive a 93 Honda Del Sol 1.6L Manual transmission

No don't use it.
Quote from the 93 del sol owners manual page 111:
5 Speed manual Transmission
Only use an API Service SF or SG grade motor oil with a viscosity of SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40.

I was always under the impression using 10w-30 should only be temporary. Hondas prefer the factory honda mtf. Amsoil would probably the only other fluid I would personally use besides factory. It is not that expensive and it is in stock

The '96 - '00 transmissions are a little different story. I didn't have good luck running 10W30 in them, notchy shifting. MTF works great, however it's still pretty hard on the input shaft bearing. I have no idea why they seemed to shift so much worse with 10W30 either, most of the parts are identical to the older transmissions.
Yep.
Probably, but that doesn't change the fact that it kills ISBs in those trannys. They would never said cheap 10W30 was better than their own MTF.

LOL, true! I just replaced the ISB. Is it ok to drain, then add oil and have them mix? Also, isn't the ISB going out on the EG common no matter what?
Yes, but MTF certainly accelerates the process. Even though those transmissions are older I still see fewer ISB failures in previously unopened transmissions vs '96 - '00 transmissions. It's the same ISB so all you can really blame is the fluid. It's worth mentioning that the new bearings generally have a metal cage (I haven't seen a plastic cage in a while) but I still think they'll go bad.
94, FWIW, my 98 DX had a plastic cage. When I replaced it, the new bearing had a metal cage. Oddly enough, the cage wasn't the problem - the outer race had cracked in multiple places. It came out in pieces. I think I've posted pictures of it before.
I've never seen the outer race crack, but I've seen lots of those ISBs get quite noisy and the plastic cage was still intact, the bearing gets rough and starts hammering and it breaks the cage, not the other way around. also, I've seen the top countershaft bearing, which has a metal cage, destroy itself, including shredding the metal cage.

The parts guy at my local Honda dealer told me to run a 1/2 qt of Honda mtf and the rest royal purple 10w30. Something about the additives in the royal purple blah blah blah.
It feels notchier than what was in there before. It smelled like gear oil so I'm assuming mtf.

How's the shifting feel with the 10w40, about the same?
Run 10W30. In an S20 trans it should shift more or less the same as long as the transmission is in good shape. MTF probably shifts a slightly nicer but it shouldn't be a huge difference. Some guys really like Amsoil.

They ship fluids. Buy genuine Honda ATF, MTF etc far more
cheaply than you can get it locally (unless you are in Natick).
