Default MAJOR oil leak, not rear main...what is it?

Hey Everyone,

So I have a massive oil leak that I thought was the rear main, though now that I have fixed the rear main and also now that I am much more familiar with my engine I realized it was nowhere near the rear main. It was dripping at the rate of a small stream, and now its about that fast. Other than that the symptoms are smoking white from the exhaust, rough running though it has run rough for years just not this bad, inconsistent revving randomly from 1-3k, and a slow coolant leak though the coolant leak may not be related. The oil seems to be coming from above the rear engine stiffener though it doesn't seem to be coming from the oil filter. I will try to turn it on tomorrow and take some pics/video now that I have it up on jack stands. The car does not and has never overheated, and I have never noticed the oil and coolant mixing. I have not pulled a spark plug to see if coolant comes out yet, so maybe I can do that tomorrow. I don't want to have to replace the head or the head gasket, but I will if that ends up being it. At least that doesn't seem to be as bad as the rear main. Any thoughts on what it could be? I really appreciate the help, I don't want to spend a lot of money and be wrong! Thanks everyone!

David

Hope the block isn't cracked. Only way to check is to clean it all up, then get under it and have someone start it and see where it's coming from. Use a bright flashlight.

Hopfully it's just a really bad valve cover gasket leak. Also could be a double oil filter gasket. Start with the easy stuff.

Check everything that has to do with oil on the backside of the motor (obviously). I 2nd maybe having the 2 oil filter gasket, its easy to not see. Oil pan sealed up nicely? Have you modded or repaired anything lately?

As mentioned, rule out a double oil filter gasket. That's pretty common.

The oil pressure switch is also located near the oil filter. Check it too.

Thanks everyone! I sure hope it is the double oil filter, and not the head or a cracked block. I haven't had time to take pics, but I will just try to find out if any of the suggestions are the issue. Thanks again.

Ok, found out what it was! It was a vtec solonoid upper gasket...Next time I will look much more carefully before I start taking things apart...
