CV half shaft re-build/replacement
Hi all,
I need to replace the passenger side CV half shaft. The outer
boot is torn but no noise or vibrations yet. I was thinking to
re-build the old half shaft for ***** n giggles.
Got the new half shaft from O'Reilly's. I noticed it weighs
a ton. Also, the outboard joint is stiff and moves only w/ great
effort on my part. Is this typical of a new half shaft? I
noticed in vids at youtube that the outer joint is pretty flexible.
Also, is it standard practice to treat the half shaft in the
manner of a slide hammer to get it fully seated on the tranny
side?
Are any specialized tools required to re-build the outer joint?
Thanks.

if its not damaged, just replace the boot after packing it with grease.
the new axles are pretty stiff until you get it installed. then it will loosen up

Thanks for the speedy response.
So, don't even separate the joint? Just grease n sheath?
In the event the joint is separated, should the stop ring at the
outer joint be replaced as well? Found a rebuild kit at Rock Auto
which includes a ring but can't tell whether it is the outer joint
stop ring or the tranny side seat ring.

Yaaa, when removing/replacing the axle as a whole, the only
ring is the set ring on the tranny side. But, when you tear down
the inner joint, there are two other rings including a stop ring
btw/ the spider and the outer joint. For the outer joint, there
is only a stop ring which holds the ball bearings assembly
in place on the shaft. Only the exploded view of the inner
joint is shown in the service manny. The following vid shows
the anatomy of the outer joint:

I understand that if you do not tear down the outer joint,
eg, separate the ball bearing assembly from the shaft, it
is unnecessary to replace the stop ring, leaving the only
ring as you said at the tranny casing.
There are several kits available at Rock Auto that include
multiple rings. I will follow-up this post later w/ the links.

Thanks.
