Post Temp gauge never reads right and car takes long to heat up.

(94 GSR)Car takes A LONG time to heat up. fan takes long to come on too. and the temp gauge in my cluster is almost always on cold. I thought it was the cluster so i went out and bought a new one, not the case im thinking bad t-stat would that make sense ?

I have experienced a bone stock GSR with a bad thermo, same symptoms, Vtec would not kick also due to the vehicle never reaching operating temperature.

Have you even checked to see if the thermostadt is present, and have or why have you not removed the old one and tested it for correct operation and replace if nec?

Also test the CTS using the factory service manual.

Does Vtec work properly, cause if so it cant be running that cold. sometimes idle isnt enough expecially to trigger the fans, a load must be placed on the car to reach complete operating temp.

always thought it was just bad/old wiring up untill today will be doing that tomorrow. vtec kicks after i've driven the car for a while.

My guess would be that your thermostat is stuck open. thats why your car is never warming up. and since your car isnt warmed up its telling your computer which is disabling vtec

kinda weird you would go and replace a cluster without doing any sort of diagnosis.

most likely thermostat stuck open.

They cost $15, so might as well. Tstat is considered part of a full tune-up anyway. If it's not that, then it's the temperature sending unit (one-wire yel/blk under the distrib).

BTW, nice sig lol

Start with your Thermostat like others have mentioned. Stick to OEM if you can, Aftermarket ones tend to not function correctly.

Flush the coolant too if you haven't done it recently.

It's easy. You might need some deep sockets though. BTW, the sensor for gauge is often referred to as the "temperature sending unit", so keep that in mind when you're looking for a replacement part. It's one wire only.
