Default Coolant reservoir over filling after headgasket job.

Just replaced a headgasket on my d16a6, resurfaced head, double checked everything.

I took it for a test drive and ran great but noticed the coolant reservoir is overfilled

What do you guys think? Faulty radiator cap?

Most likely a leak into the coolant passages from the combustion chamber

I hope this^ is the case. Inexpensive fix, if so.

Is the engine also overheating?

Did you bleed the cooling system?

There's a kit you can buy to test for exhaust gases in the coolant.

A cylinder compression test also may prove informative.

Car does not overheat one bit. Just came back driving it a good 30 minutes, Drove great.

I have not bleed the system. Part of me thinks there too much coolant in the system. Could that be a case?

Ill just replace the radiator cap , then bleed the system and go from there.

you HAVE to bleed the air out. let the car run with the radiator cap off and heat on full blast until the car is up to full temp and the fan comes on. it will appear to overflow but will eventually go down when the thermostat opens. if you don't do this you will have cooling system issues. if after bleeding you still have issues then a combustion test, compression test, and radiator cap pressure test will be the next steps to finding your answer. goodluck

I have one of those kits as do several of my co-workers/friends. We all agree that by the time it shows you have a head gasket leak you already knew you had a head gasket leak. It only seems to work on engines that are obvious.

What is your experience with Ron?

Me too.

Get your coolant system pressure tested. Maybe you have the wrong radiator cap. There seems to be at least two different radiator caps that screw on to the honda size radiator but one of them is wrong size/depth.

Take off your radiator cap, start your engine and see if you get bubbles during idle.
Step away from the car (no helpers around the front) and rev the engine.
If water comes out of the radiator then it's clearly a head gasket issue.

Me and my driveway mechanic ways.

My bad for the late response.
I bleed the system and everything looks fine for now.
I didnt know i had to bleed the cooling system after a headgasket replacement (Noob Mistake)

Thanks for all the tips and info.
