Welded/locked diff
That's typical pricing for name brand LSD's. If you don't mind doing some work when you get it, you can always do the budget-minded LSD and rebuild it when you get it. It'll need a rebuild when you get it, simply because they're not put together very well from the manufacturer (there's already tons of information out there regarding rebuilding them to make them perform).

Yes. They typically come with a horrible finish inside, and would easily lead to problems. Taking the time to knock off burrs, re-arrange the conical washers for proper pre-load, and cleaning up any casting leftovers would definitely yield a longer life for your transmission. Also, if you can, try and measure the run-out. In recent times, there haven't been issues, but the older ones they made were problematic.

The 5th gear you have is already the longest you're going to get from a D17 manual transmission. If you change out your final drive to one from an HX transmission, you'll get better fuel economy... but your 1-4th gears will suffer on acceleration.

Yeah, its a standard primary/secondary shaft layout. I do not know if the previous generation D-series transmission gears will work or not. I do not know the diameters of the p/s shafts to give any sort of solid information.
I'm sure if I asked, someone here would have it. Or google
