Axle broke, now no gears, and weird noises
my friend has a 98 ls. he isnt a car guy, so sometimes he is neglectful. He turned a hard left, and his passenger side axles outer joint grenaded. he heard a loud pop, then the sound of bearings scattering.
he said he lost all gears, the clutch wouldnt stall the engine, but it would make it drop in rpms when you release the clutch, so it seems its making contact.
when we went to get the car, we put in a new axle. still no gears, no nothing. when we pushed the car out of the lot, we heard horrendous popping, clanking, and grinding for a bit. it felt like it binded up, and then released. horrible sounds though, and it definitely sounded like it was coming from the trans. he said the shifter felt weird too, like it wasnt going all the way in to any gears. also, when we pulled the axles and trans, there was hardly any fluid in it.
we pulled the trans, is there a way to see if its messed up without crackin the case? my poor friend is on a budget, so we are trying to figure this out, if the trans isnt fucked, we would like to reuse it, but thats a long shot. i should have troubleshot before we pulled it, but hes desperate.
will an axle breaking grenade a trans like that? could it be a clutch issue?
thanks guys

The transmission, at least the differential is toast, you will need to pull it apart to repair anyway, you will not know the extent of the damage untill you do pull it apart, may be easier to just find a used LS transmission. 94
You can crack the case without too much effort or added expense. And if you havent done it before consider it good practice since you wont lose anything by taking a look to see what you busted
