HELP WEIRD GRINDING/Rubbing noise?
Hey guys so I have a 2001 acura integra gsr that has a weird either rubbing or slight grinding noise when the car decelerates. It doesn't matter what gear im in however in higher gears the noise is less noticeable. Maybe it is less noticeable because my exhaust is loud. The problem occurs when my foot is completely off the clutch and completely off the gas and the car is slowing down due to natural forces. Once I push the clutch in or pop it into neutral the noise goes away. I initially thought it was tire rub but I recently raised the car so that should not still be happening. I've been looking online and I think it's a bearing. Either throw out or wheel or something. I hope I don't need a tranny rebuild. The car has 123K miles on it. Any ideas?
I am guessing clutch related as noise goes away when clutch is disengaged.
If your still on the original clutch, it's time for a new on anyway, take it to a reliable shop have them listen to the "grinding" noise to see what they think.
Sound does not translate well in print, not much better in a sound clip or vid, you really need to be sitting in the drivers seat to really hear it. 94

Thanks for the advice. It may need a new clutch but supposedly it was replaced last year. It feels fine to me when I engage and disengage. Ill go get it checked out tomorrow. But for now do you think it could be a jacked up bearing?
I have no clue. I've showed an audio guy that drove a prelude and he said my clutch is probably sticking, a mechanic that said there is nothing wrong when there is clearly something wrong, another mechanic that said it was tire rub, another mechanic that said it was the throw out bearing. I have no damn clue what it is. Tomorrow I'm taking it to a mechanic that races mazdas and is part of lucky 7 racing and hopefully he can let me know what's wrong.
that sounds like input shaft bearing.
i had a gsr tranny my homie gave me. got excited and put it in and everytime i shifted i heard some grinding noise but gears weren't grinding. best bet to tell if it is, start your car pop your hood and listen for the grinding sound around the tranny area. if your hearing it then its input shaft bearing

The thing is I just got the car smogged and when they had it on the machine the guy took it up to fourth gear and when he decelerated there was absolutely no noise. That's what led me to believe it was rubbing. There are no grinds shifting gears. Only when the car slows down does it make that noise. However if it is rubbing and only when the car is slowing down it should still make that noise in neutral. And oddly it doesn't make the noise. Also if you disengage the clutch the noise stops leading me to believe its not rubbing and something more serious. It's pretty frustrating.
sorry for hijacking, but I'm actually having a similar problem.. @_@ and a honda kid told me it's the input shaft bearing and another group of honda kids told me it's my throwout bearing.. but from what I've researched, it would be the throwout bearing if it whines constantly? because that's what happened to my SR20.
the only downside is.. i have no garage whatsoever or tech know-how to do an input shaft bearing which just makes me mad
i heard changing tranny fluid might help the noise go away but it's really just covering up the problem :/

so after you changed the fluid, was the noise any softer? or the same? a throw out bearing is like $20. and you might as well change your clutch if you're doing a throwout bearing.
Yes the noise was there after. I spent 2 days taking out my tranny and replacing my clutch with a friend and I also replaced the throwout bearing. Both the clutch and bearing were all F&^*ed up and now the noise is either gone or less noticible. I recently bought the car so it was not my doing of messing up this car (just a sidenote). I was recently driving home and the check engine light came on but i tuened the car off and back on and the light doesnt come back on. I tuned up the car with new plugs, wires, fluids, cleaners, the whole shabang about 2 weeks ago and i checked the oil and there was NONE in the motor. There is no oil leaks under the car or around the motor so that leads me to believe im burning a tremendous amount of oil. On friday im going to do a compression check to see how bad the problem is but if I need a rebuild im probably just going to sell the car. Also when I took out the tranny the dude had a hole the size of a quarter in the damn intake. Its a possibility those metal particles got into my engine -_-. Hopefully I dont need a rebuild because I really like the car.
Lastly, I know the car is burning oil because VTEC was cutting off at 5K rpm. The engine started to sputter and thats when i saw there was no oil and so added more oil. i had my friend drive behind me to see if the car was shooting out and smoke when VTEC was engaged because it smelled funny in the car. And to no suprise the car is shooting out a grayish smoke when you push the car. Doesnt look good
Any suggestions you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated.
