Default 2001 Prelude. No key.

Just purchased a 2001 Prelude at an auction and I will not get any keys along with it. I am trying to find the cheapest solution to obtain a key.

Option 1-
Since these have the immobilizer system the dealership said I would have to replace the immobilizer, tow the car to them, and they would reprogram everything for approximately 450$.

Option 2-
Found this on (ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Keys-Cut-Pro...-/180753653898 item=180753653898&viewitem=&vxp=mtr&nma=true&si=%2 FDKqU5C7KtGhkPNo6wAxYjpZAHk%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=n c&_trksid=p2047675.l2557)
- basically I send in my immobilizer, ecu, and trunk lock cylinder and they make two keys and its "plug and play" from there. (Only bad thing is its in Maryland and I am in Hawaii.)

Option 3-
I'm going to try to see if the dealership can do option 2, but they closed about 2 hours ago so I didn't get a chance to call them back.

Does any one else have any more knowledge/input on this??

*****Fix Action and Details*****

SHE's alive!!!! So the keys I recieved from the company "AMP" in Gaithersburg, MD worked just as advertised. I shipped my immobilizer and trunk lock cylinder out on Dec. 27th, AMP recieved the box on Dec. 31st and then shipped it my way Jan. 2. The box got to me on Jan. 8 with the reprogrammed immobilizer and 2 new keys. From there it was plug and play, car cranked right up. The whole proccess took less than 2 weeks (keep in mind that I am located in Hawaii and the company in Maryland). Cost 1/3rd the amount that the dealership wanted and I did not have to tow the vehicle anywhere.

Also, I read that there was a emergency start brake code that would allow you to get a key made with no chip and put the hand brake code in and start it up. Anyone know if this can be done? This being a temporary fix of course.

Afaik the immobilizer bypass only works in a limited manner...basically enough to get to the dealer.

I would do what has been mentioned above if you are purchasing this vehicle to modify/play with. An obd1 ecu down the road will already be an almost necessity when you get into modifying the vehicle to gain more power. However if you are purchasing for re-sale purposes or have emissions inspections to deal with it may be better to go with one of the ideas you already listed. The obd1 ecu and conversion harness will only run you 150 if you shop around.

Just purchase a 'T5' key from the dealership, and they can cut it using your VIN#. A 'T5' key emulates a master key and it will start the car.

I believe the t5 key only works if you already have one key, they match it to the key you already have.

I would do this but I'll have to pass inspection with this vehicle right away.

Just buy a Ebay blank key with a chip, Remove trunk lock. Take key and lock to lock smith they will cut that key for you. Tow your car to the dealer, They will program the new key for about 60 I think.

Some lock smith company's can program the key too.

At lease thats the way I did it.

Not sure why you keep repeating this. It will not work with out a programmed key already present.

To remove the Immobilizer you have to get an OBD1 ecu, Jumper and there is a white/grey box under the dash on the driver side you have to jumper some wires.

Update: So I just talked to honda, they said that they couldn't release the Emergency Brake code to anyone, that it was only for internal use. Any technicians know if this is legit?

You have several options presented to you in this thread. I don't think Honda is just going to give out the bypass security code to just anyone as then it gets leaked into the wild.

If you bought the car knowing you weren't getting a key and that it had an immobilizer, I'd have assumed you looked into your options (and pricing) before buying.

You need a new key, plain and simple. Have one cut and then have the vehicle reprogrammed or remove the immobilizer from the ECU. You're really not going to get around this.

I'm not trying to get around this. Money is not an issue but I am also not just going to throw money at the dealership when we all know they jack prices sky high when doing any type of work. I'm going to go with the company I found on ebay that will program my current immobilizer to new keys that they provide... thus saving 250$...thanks for some input

And honda giving out the bypass security code is like them making you a key, you must show proof of ownership and you are not just going to give someone your key, just like you are not going to give out the code, which is VIN specific..

For future reference, just in case anyone runs into the same situation this will cost 1/3rd of what the dealer is asking and it is plug and play

Great. An alternative to the dealership.
