Default Why does this happen? video

Ok, it's a long story how I've gotten to this point, but for full info you can look at thread that says "stranded at work again, with other rex this time...." Anyway, had this rattle, changed dizzy, cap, rotor and still there. I crushed power wire installing the new one, rewired it kept getting code 8. Got junkyard dizzy and fixed that prob. But with this dizzy and the others I can hook up timing light and you can clearly see it missing by the flashes, until I pull off one end or the other of the plug wire and hold it a little away from it's contact point, just enough its not touching but still contacting, and the miss (on that cylinder) goes away. This is evidenced in the video, along with the rattle which seem slouder on video but you can get the idea. This "miss" is on all cylinders and is irregular in the vid I just have it hooked on the #4 so you can see me loosen the plug wire from cap.(Which if you watch I shock the hell outta myself as soon as I take it off, lol) the last few seconds without a fire I had let go of the trigger so you know it's not missing that many hits in a row. Anyone have an idea wha can cause this? This is dizzy #3 doing it so I know it's not that, rotor #3 and cap #2 also. I'm at a loss on this. Help is much appreciated, thanks.

I know these are simple questions. But they need to be asked anyways.

Is it the correct distributor? I've seen some folks install junkyard distributors that were the wrong ones.

Also, have you checked your timing belt? Is it new or is it installed correctly? It almost sounds like your engine is trying to ignite during the exhaust stroke. I've seen that before too.

How about the ignition wires? Are they installed correctly? You cannot believe the guys who have worked on Honda's for a long time that sometimes install the wires wrong.

How are your grounds? That is another thing that can cause ignition problems.

Have you checked your computer? How about the igniter?

Just asking questions is all. Hard to tell from the video what the problem is. Try to eliminate the easy possible problems first then move on to the harder ones. You may find that it is something really simple that is the problem.

It is the right dizzy, wires are right i quadruple checked, by igniter u mean rotor in dizzy? grounds cleaned and reconnected, timing belt looks fairly new and doent appear to have any issues(just checked it yesterday) and i have set thw timing umpteen times, although not able to set it perfectly it will only advance to 2° retarded (lol). I am so confused by this car, and the previous owner threw a few new parts at it and gave up lol. Guess thats why i got it fot $1100 lol. Oh well, btw me and you ht guys it will eventually be a good car. Thanks for taking time to point out some possibilties.

part of your problem is you're supposed to put the ignition hook up on the spark plug end of the wire not the dizzy as far as testing goes, on cylinder one (closest to timing belt) also it looks like you have your plug wires off one spot?

here's the correct order:

i know the order, i looked it up and.checked it a few times to be sure ( a couple of the wires are a bit long and make it look a little jumbled),and i put it where i did for video. it does the same no matter where you put it though. ( as far as the missed flashes) :-[

Bump, as I still have no clue what's up with this, it's getting a whopping 21 hwy mpgs too.. How in the world can pulling the wire away slightly make a miss go away..?

Edit: Just watched the video and for some reason it doesn't look the same. So what happens is it has an intermittent miss (which I don't hear) until I pull the wire away slightly, then it never misses. But this is all cylinders and everything from the engine harness to dizzy connector down to the spark plugs is new or known to be good..

No I haven't. I could look into it, I have never done or seen it done before. Im not really that knowledgable with cars, just moreso than an average person id say, and am very mechanically inclined. I have really only dealy with simpler probs and easy diy external parts( alternator, starter, water pump, brakes etc.) I will look it up and see about it after work. thanks.

heh it does sound that way on video, but it isnt actually that bad. must just be the rattle + close proximity to engine making it sound worse. i actually lol'd when I read that tho. :-)

Check the fuel injector plugs, sometimes the pins get pulled out.
