You were driving to work and suddenly stopped...for coffee? For me, when timing moves right, I feel great. Other times it's pushing and shoving. Back to your problem: Does car turn over? Did your timing belt break?

Have someone try to start engine while you ascertain where the different sound is coming from. Could be a number of issues: broken valve train components, alternator bearing, broken distributor component, etc.

that sound your hearing is coming from your engine yes
thats the sound of it choking on gas because the starter isnt getting enough voltage from the battery to spark the fuel
if your timing belt is fine then a good place to start is your battery if it reads anything less than 12-9 volts get it recharged an replace your alternator
anything below 9v replace the battery an alternator let me know if it works out

Does it sound like its freewheeling? And how did you check the belt? 9 times outta 10 when your car just dies (I assume that's what you meant by "suddenly stopped") its because the belt broke, skipped a tooth or two, or a chunk of teeth we're ripped off and the crank has nothing to grab onto. You need to make sure your valve train is turning when your cranking the engine. You can take the oil cap off and check for that

It might be your fuel pump as well......if it got clogged or quit on you, the car definately wouldn't start. Check if you can hear it come on when you turn your key on, sounds like a slight humming noise.
