Just want to confirm whether the ECU runs open loop only if the IAT code is on. A friend asked me and I told him I'm pretty sure he can't get into closed loop unless he has a functioning IAT. Does anyone know for sure?

I have never tested to find out but why would you?
Fix the IAT & call it a day...

 

^ I second that, but yes it should stay in open loop except for P73 which tends to go into limp mode.
You can jump a 1ohm resistor across the IAT plug to steady the circuit, the ECU should respond and the O2 will settle back to 0.5v when the fuel trim compensates.
