I got a bad catalytic converter an wanted to know what problems it could cause

 

As long as it's not clogged, it will only add noise. If it's clogged back pressure will give issues out the wazoo! & it would need to be corrected asap

Ok thanks my exhaust smells like its burning oil any ideas

 

If it's burning oil then you need to find out why or how it's burning oil, if you have blue smoke that is an internal engine issue. If its just smelling then it's most likely an oil leak onto the exhaust. That is up to you to determine how the oil is being burnt.

 

If your buring oil, why change it now...its just going plug up the new converter.

 

If it's clogged enough to restrict flow, excessive heat could cook and destroy your exhaust valves.

I wouldn't put a new one in just yet, as others have said, you have to find out where you oil leak is coming from, you might clog and destroy the new one.

 

I removed my Cat and...POWER! Felt guilty about the enviornment though so placed a high flow Cat on it and then I placed a cold air intake on it also and the difference was noticeable. I went with the short Cold Air intake and runs great.

 

Hey sorry for threadjack, my cat is like welded / fused to header... I just tried a hack saw between the two flanges there is a line there slightly visible. its taking too long any sugesstions? Thanks

Hi everyone I'm new to this site and can not post yet but I'm in desperate need of help ! I have a 1996 civic 2 CX ...i believe the engine is a 1997 Tech ...just a couple of questions, i experiencing rattling and Oder from the cat and i know it has to be replaced but can it effect the performance of the vehicle ? It runs GREAT cold but when it warms up it dog's through low RPM...is it STILL the catalytic converter or is there something else going on there

Just a heads up.... You might want to post this question in one of the Civic forum catalytic converter related threads. You might get more Civic related opinions.

However, as little as I know about Civic's. I might be able to help you out a bit.

What type of odor are you getting and why do you suspect the cat?

Is your check engine light on?

A clogged cat will hurt performance. If it was wide open or you were getting a secondary O2 sensor error code. It won't always cause any significant performance issues warm or cold.



If you replace the cat and that doesn't solve the issue it could have something to do with your EGR system or an engine coolant temp sensor issue.

Hi...and thanks for the responses ...YES my engine light is on and it's smells like sulfur sometimes and you can hear a rattling sound from time to time....I'll be checking out the EGR and cooling system sensor for sure...and thanks for the advice

 

With the CEL on, have you had the codes read from the ECU? If you have, what codes dose it have stored? If not, you should find someone who can scan them for you.

I'm not 100% but I know with my 96 Accord you can still do the self diagnostics (paperclip method) to read the CEL flashes of the stored ECU codes.

 

Oreilly's has one for $229 last I checked for direct bolt on
