Why is this H22 running so rich?
Hi guys. I'm having a problem with a sixth generation accord that has been swapped with a JDMH22 engine and corresponding OBD1 ECU ( I don't remember the ecu code but it checks out as being from an auto H22 prelude).
The problem is that the car runs extremely rich, such that it fouls the plugs. If you free rev it in park you can clearly see black smoke out the tailpipe.
I have been fooling around with it for a while now in my spare time. Here are the things I have done so far:
- changed plugs and air filter.
-confirmed that the check light is working and that there are no ECU error codes.
- did a compression test, all four cylinders were about 220 psi (don't recall the exact number).
-confirmed that the fuel return line is not blocked and that the fuel pressure regulator is working and receiving a vacuum signal.
-Checked that the map sensor, air temp sensor and coolant temp sensor all report sensible values to the ecu.
-Checked that the tps reports sensible values to the ecu.
-Checked mechanical timing, timing marks line up okay.
The car starts and runs smooth enough without any misfires (until the plugs totally foul up) but is seriously down on power when you drive it.
The only other things I can think to check are:
- ignition timing, but the distributor does not seem overly retarded (or overly advanced for that matter). I haven't been focusing on an ignition issue because the richness is an obvious problem (black smoke is not from the engine miss firing).
- check if the injectors are the wrong size. This one just came to me as i type this but this is doubtful as the engine is totally stock otherwise so it is unlikely that the injectors would have been swapped.
I am running out of ideas. Can anyone think of anything else to check?
Thanks for the help.

My guess would be either wrong injectors or chipped ECU. The injectors could have been swapped and then run with a chipped ECU which you didn't get.
