Please look through the FAQ's here: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-2001-2005-78/faqs-guidelines-read-before-posting-2101211/

The topic regarding swapping to a D17A2 has been covered in depth.

non-VTEC engine - D17A1
VTEC version of your engine - D17A2

Nobody is bashing here, so you're misreading something.

The engines don't vary much at all. You'll need the EX ECU, engine harness, and (obviously) the drivetrain. You'll have to get the immobilizer re-coded at a Honda dealership, but the rest you should be able to do in the garage with basic tools.

Well, obviously VTEC control. But, to be honest, there are a few other things that are switched around (if memory serves me right). I think the VTEC head-swap guide in the FAQ's might have more information on the subject, but its been a while since I've looked at it.

so its not just as easy as buying a computer from an ex and engine and just plugging in the computer and bolting a new engine in.

It is, kinda
You will need a EX ecu to run the ex engine, since the hx is a lean burn vtec the ex engine might not respond properly. when you swap out an ecu you need to go to a dealer to reflash it to your key

I think the hx harness might be different because I know the o2 sensors are different between ex and hx, even though they both have vtec
