I drove my 2007 EX without any oil for several hundred miles
I hope this does not get the obvious "that’s bad, what were you thinking" I have owned 3 civics and my wife has a 2006 also. She recently had an issue with hers and I have been so focused on hers financially I let mine kind of go.
I want to start by coming totally clean; I use full synthetic whatever the dealer usually gives me. I let the oil change light go until 3800 miles overdue. ( I know terrible) I was driving at night about 5 days ago and saw a red flicker in my dash but the flicker was so fast I could not identify it. I originally thought it was my battery light, continued to drive and saw another flicker but I could not identify as it was literally so fast it was not recognizable. I pull over to a gas station and decide to check the oil since I know the oil and battery are both red usually. It was off stick and put a quart in, checked oil and repeated this 4 times. WTF I almost cried as I just started a small online business and my wife’s Honda has issues. Also I only have two more payments to go and want this thing to last 200K+ miles. (Currently 86K) (She put a tank of diesel in her 06 civic about 3 months ago and it’s never been the same, its has many issues now)
I went to Walmart immediately and changed the oil, replaced it will full synthetic Castrol 5w20.
So here is my issue: I can't tell what damage I did if any, I am losing sleep over this and very upset with myself. I am a big stickler for maintenance and so busy getting my wife to take care of her car I screwed up. How can I know what is wrong with it? When I went to Walmart they said it was still half a quart low. So basically this thing was pretty darn dry shouldn't I be hearing pings and clicks and shoveling bearings off the ground.
Right now it runs like the day it was new and because of that I am expecting it to fall apart right when I need it most. I even looked at the stick after the oil change and the oil was so clear it was like water.
Where is the metal shavings and grit you would expect? It does not appear to be burning oil either I can't smell or see it.
What’s the long term prognosis? My brother seems to think that nothing is wrong and that I dodged a bullet as he has heard of things running for minutes under high stress with the drain plug removed and busted oil pumps.
If the oil light was solid I should be worried. Your opinions? Did I dodge a bullet?

If you're not experiencing any issues I don't know what you're all worked up about. The light doesn't come on when you're out of oil, it clmes on when youre low, so I doubt it was dry. Just use it as a learning experience and move on.
Keep checking the oil, especially when it's overdue.
I see a couple cars every week that are really really low, with no major side effects. Just don't do it again.

I would also consider going with a thicker oil such as a 5w30 or 5w40. I find 5w20 is way to thin for my liking.
I made that mistake when I was a younger lad with my 02 SVT Focus. Traveling daily through a mountain road... Basically... it still felt strong... then one day I was at a stop and it just died. I heard nothing. Just died.
Inspection revealed it had no oil in it. I heard nothing. I speculate something happened while driving through the mountain, but my tires were squealing too much for me to notice... maybe. Basically... I blew a hole in the intake manifold, and the shrapnel found it's way into the engine. Totally hosed.
Learned my lesson. Change your oil!
Hope you don't have anything like that happening.

a while back when i had my 4th gen prelude. it was lowered and went through one of those quick drive through car washes and i knew it scrapped something under my car but i didnt think it was anything major. halfway to my buddies house about 50 miles from me, the oil light came on but i figured i was halfway there and me being a young kid and not knowing how serious this could be drove all the way to my destination exiting the freeway and stopping a autozone where i checked my oil level.
I HAD NO OIL. so most likely drove without any oil for a good 25 miles atleast. it wasnt even dripping any more. i called a tow truck and took it to a shop who had to replace my oil pan. they didnt replace anything else. i used mobil 1 synthetic then so i always felt like it was the synthetic oil that saved me because they had those commercials where they run the motors without oil to see how long they go before seizing. but i think as there as theres "some" kind of lube in there the internals would be fine. I never had a issue with that car after that and i drove it hard for miles.

If yiur letting it go 4000 miles overdue then im sorry but I would not call you a stickler for maintenance at all.
as long as it is running fine you have nothing to worry about. Years back I had a z6 motor not read any oil, put 4 quarts in and it was still not registering on the dipstick. Next day it registered full. No idea what caused it but that motor ran fine for a long time no issues.
