Default 5spd Jumps out of 3 and 5th

2002 Civic 5spd LX
I just took the trans out and replaced the input shaft bearing, clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. Got it all back together and now the bearing noise is gone but it jumps out of 3rd and 5th when I let off the accelerator?

What did I do wrong?

It could be worn shift linkage, or your syncros might be worn out.

It was fine before I took it apart. Just had an input bearing noise. Car has 100,000 miles.

did you put the 2 ball bearing detent with the springs back on the tranny?

when you pulled the main shaft and counter shaft out with the shift rods, do you remember if you pulled the 5hth and reverse gear set by accident and misplaced the slider and synchros and wires when you put it back together?

bummer! you may need to pull it back out.

I did put the detent *****, springs and bolts back. I pulled the reverse gear idler gear and shaft and then both shafts and gears. Put in the new bearing and then put it all back. All sliders were in the correct slots and all syncros and wires appeared to be in correct. It shifts through all of the gears fine but just won't stay in 3 or 5th unless you hold it. Third and fifth are on two different sliders I believe.

It's not going to be a syncro. I suspect you put something back together wrong. Time to pull it again. You have a Helm? This time bench shift it before putting it back in. I suspect dentent ***** or something else in the linkage isn't right. There's a trick to pulling the gears without disassembling the shifting linkage.

There are 2 metal spacers/washers in front of the main shaft up against the input shaft bearing that usually fall out when you pull both shafts and gears. Did you make sure you put those back? If not, it will shift the 3/4 and 5 gear sets close to the clutch housing, and might explain why 3rd and 5th are further out of engagement point.

No I put them back against the new input shaft bearing. It shifts fine on the bench and fine when it is in the car by hand. The detents align with the ***** when I take out the detent screws. The snap ring is locked into the other shaft bearing and that bearing turns freely.

Remove the air intake snorkels so you can observe the shift points. With engine OFF, put it in 3rd gear. Is the selector in the max locked position? Remove the first shift cable for 3/4 gears and see if you can still move it some more to fully engage 3rd gear. If you can, you need to find out why it is not getting maximum throw.

Try removing the 2 shifter cables from the tranny selector and manually put it on 5th gear to check if you are getting maximum throw.

With the cables on or off I am getting maximum throw. If i shift it into third or fifth with the shifter I can not move it manually any further from under the hood. The only thing I am wondering about is where I put the two spacers/washers. I may have put them under the case bearing instead of on top of the input shaft bearing.

That sucks if you put the spacers in before the bearing.

The order of installation is,
1. oil seal goes to the bellhousing first PN 8,
2. then bearing PN 5,
3. 2 spacers PN 13 & 14
4. then the main shaft and gears PN 1 etc..

That's what I did. Took it out and they were backwards. Thanks for your help.

You pulled the transmission out again? I admire your patience.

Glad you got it fixed.

I am still debating when to drop my engine and tranny to replace the input bearing and check the rod bearings. I have 195k miles on the engine and have some rattle at 3k rpm.
