Standalone vs factory ecu re-tune
I have been told by a reputable tuner(martin from z-fever/enthalpy) that his "rom tunes" are just as good as a standalone tune. Some of these so-called tunes are mail order. I am trying to explain to him that a standalone tune is leaps and bounds better than a factory ecu re-tune. Am I incorrect? here is a link to the discussion.

Any input in the original thread would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

I think you are getting your terms mixed up here.
Rom tune (aka base map) - is a software bin file that contains the code to run an engine management system. (both a modified ECU and standalone EMS use some sort of ROM file)
Standalone - is the hardware, or engine management system (EMS) that the ROM/Tune is uploaded to.
Now if you are asking if a base map (ROM Tune) is just as good as an actual dyno tune, then you are correct, they are not! Nothing beats having your car tuned on the rollers.
If you are asking if a chipped OEM ECU is just as good as a standalone EMS (AEM, Motech), then you are incorrect. A properly chipped and tuned OEM ECU can be just as reliable, if not more reliable, than a standalone aftermarket EMS unit.
That being said, this really all depends on your engine and the extent of any external modifications/additions that you may have that require management via the EMS. Even then, the Neptune Demon w/a chipped OEM ECU has a lot of that covered as well.
Edit*
Just noticed that this isn't even honda related...... Not sure about the capabilities of the Nissan OEM ECU and flashing/tuning it. Have to wait for the Nissan guys to chime in.

Get in touch with Kenny Sampson (Turbogixxer (at) gmail.com) or Alpha (tuning (at) inductionperformance.com) and talk to them about possibly getting a Nismotronic setup from Nismotronic.com.
