-noob alert- 05 civic gasket/engine swap
Hi! Ive been looking for my first car a lot recently and have been immersed in a whole new world of automobile mechanics. Untill this afternoon I had no idea vtec was an engine, and not a type of bio-fuel. hehe.
So theres an 05 civic with 212kmi and blown gaskets.. I'm wondering if its possible and plausible to replace the engine altogether, rather than just repair the gaskets, with a hybrid engine, or a K series... etc.
Like, what is good about a K series engine? I see a lot of k-swapping done. Are they efficient? What is the best commuter engine I could put into an 05 civic, and would it be worth it??
Thanks! :D

K series engines are a little more "sporty" for a lack of a better word. Hybrid boy too sure if you can do that but I'm sure its pretty difficult if its possible. For best results overhaul your engine or get another low mileage replacement engine.
For ease of replacement and best "commuter" engine - get another D17.
For more power, but at significantly more cost - K-swap. (A2 or Z, not A3)
Hybrid swap? Forget about it.
It may be worth your while to remove the head and have it checked for warpage. If it's within spec or can easily be machined and remain within spec, just replace the gasket. Although, with 212k miles, I can understand why you'd consider replacing it with a D17 that has much lower mileage on it.
Stay with what you have, though. By that I mean if you have a D17A1, replace it with a (04-05) D17A1. (DX/LX models)
If you have an EX, replace it with a (04-05) D17A2.

Alright, I spoke with a few mechanics today and he told me pretty much the same thing, so it looks like I'll stick with that engine type, if I replace it at all. Thanks a ton
because its a far drive, I'll probably get some pictures of it first and figure out the exact cost for me to tow and repair. Again, thanks!
