D16y5 with y8 head advice for Cali legal build
Hi, I'm very new in this area & am hoping that I would be able to receive very good helpful advice.. Thank you all in advance..
Ok, so I recently bought a 97' civic HX 1.6 vtec-e off some lady that NEVER took care of the poor thing.. I recently did the whole tune up, spark plugs, wires ect.. Also cleaned out the egr flow port & a new rad, thermoswitch & thermostat...
My main question is what can I do to the head (the y8 head that is) to gain close if not 200HP but still be CA legal?
I do understand & am aware that the y8 head is a direct bolt on to my y5 block, also that I will need the intake man, injectors, cam sprocket, y8 timing belt and the EX ecu, but can't I use my ecu with the y8 head since the vtec is programmed to kick in around 3k? Also I am aware of resplicing the o2 sensor & using the EX tranny, but will I need a HX's clutch disk plate bc of the spine count?
Oh I do plan on doing a port & polish on the head, with a stage 2 N/A cam & go with new sleeves with a bit of a over bore with forged pistons & rods, with new rod bearings.
I want to keep it all N/A, no boost of any type..
I highly appreciate any & all advice FROM ANY/ALL WHO HONESTLY KNOW!! Thank you

you can not have a non vtec block with a vtec head. it is illegal in CA for smog regulations. no aftermarket parts inside the motor either. it will most likely not pass emmisions with raised compression either
your best bet for more horsepower is to buy a stock b series that isnt stolen and take it to the B.A.R/Ref station to get a sticker for the motor put on your door jam.
To the OP...mayfly and Kyden are pretty much right.
To squeeze 200 WHP out of a d-series will take quite a bit of money plus it will not be legal here in CA.
What part of CA are you in? I ask this because different counties have different smog laws.
The Y8 head MAY (MAY) be able to pass smog on the D16Y5 block, if and only if you reuse the Y5 Intake and manifold. The Y5 uses an EGR system which the Y7 and Y8 do not use. In which case you would have to use the Y5 ECU...giving you net gains of little to none.
If you want an easy and streetable 200HP without boost that will smog, its pretty much comes down to a swap...H-Series, F-Series, B-Series, or K-series...all of these can get you your goals and will smog (except for B20 and some K's from the CRV)
But hey, its your car, have fun with it and do what makes you happy! At least tell me it still has the HX enkei rims on it!

@Mayfly: it is a vtec.. Very tiny vtec but I understand what, your saying.. Thank yo for your feedback!!
@B20DelSol: Hey brother thank you for a big eye opener!! Did some quick research and if and that's if I can find everything like the ecu, engine bay harness and smog required parts I'd like to go with the F20B since that bad boy came out with 200 whp, standard that is, but auto came out with less HP do to different cams. What all will I need for a proper Cali smog legal barred F20B besides the ecu, wiring harness from motor bay to ecu, all smog equipment, and of course exh. man with the cat and o2 sensors?
Thank you guys again!!!

@theguy22: lmao, hell no I'm not tryn to be no bad @ss, lol.. Dnt want to waist $$ on something that won't produce 200+whp but still be smog legal in Cali.
@kyden: your right it won't pass smog, just looked it up, so I guess I'll just go with the H22A and get all the necessary parts, wiring, ecu ect..
I can still keep my fuse box and everything that is running to it right? I'll just need the H22A ecu, wiring harness, smog equipment and cat with sensors right?
Please let me know if I need more than listed tnx!

The engine can not be out of a SUV and must be the same age or newer than the car it is being put into.
You must also use all emission controls from the engine that is being swapped into the car.
I asked what county you are in because some (like Calaveras County for example (Angels Camp-Arnold area) ) do not require a biennial smog. Meaning, you only need to smog when you buy or sell a vehicle. Sutter County however requires biennial smog.
