That's about right, 189hp is not bad, what was your TQ?, what octane you using? With the wiseco pistons compression is more 11:1-11:5(they kind of made a mistake on there website awhile back, one of the member here found that out) If you want more HP get a better header/exhaust combo, intake(3in with a velocity stack?), larger cams-stage3 of some sort, but if have to becareful because you are running oversized valves. If your valves were STD size go skunk2 pro 2s you can get a little HP. What are goals? HP?

220-230hp? Then you might want to start all over! Lol! Rebore/stroke to 2.0+ LS crank/rods, etc, etc. Or sell motor, buy a k20 then mod that! Or direct port NOS with current motor.

Is your current motor/setup new? If so how many miles? And if new, why build the motor then give up, realistically 189whp is not that bad, maybe find a better tuner? K20 will set you back 6k-10k.

My build is very similar to yours cept I have a 81 (stock bore) with about 10.8 compression on skunk2 pro 2 cams. Came out to 201whp and 149tq. Get a better tuner I kno I have more to get out of mine. Going to bisI sometime in November. Eriks racing tuned it but he didnt spend much time on it (30 m mins) my vtec needs to be tuned better

His cams are holding him back, sk2p2 are way more aggressive than the Brian crowers stage 2 but he can't run those. Better tune/tuner will at lease get him to 200 maybe?

Congrats on your horse power numbers with your current setup, they are very respectable for a strong street car. However, it will take a bit more of an investment other than just camshafts to reach your new horse power goals.

As hYbRid_Eg6 mentioned as well, oversized valves can play a major factor when upgrading to large camshaft profiles on a b-series engines. B-series vtec valve angle is very poor in design and can cause major issues with valve to valve clearances with the combination of large lift/duration camshafts and oversized valves which may require additional head work and careful clearance checking if you stick with oversized valves.

I do agree with your choice to just moving up to a k-series engine if it is in your budget being it has larger displacement, as well a better flowing cylinder head from the factory to build upon. Just invest well on engine management with tuning.
