92 Civic w/ carb engine - Done with this engine

Icon2 92 Civic w/ carb engine - Done with this engine

So here i am, once again cruisin in my totaly screwed up civic (i notice more and more **** ups the previous owner did to it). And i suddenly realize that i'm done with this engine.

So, i know that my engine at the moment has a carb. Don't like this at all cause i can't do those things with it that i want to.

At the moment i think about this. My engine starts to be crappy once again (slow pull ups. Weird refrains when slowing down on the engine.)

So i decided i want a new engine!
Now i know that the more power i get out of it, the less the KMPL is (in my case it's kilometers per liter instead of miles per gallon). So i would rather have like a 1.5 - 1.8 (max) instead of going all out with a 2.0 or higher.

Now.. My real question here is....
What is the best engine for me at the time?

I was thinking about maybe a B18C, wich ofcourse easily has the wanted power combined with not "too much" fuel drain.
Or a B16b engine.

Now i know i have a EDM eg. But i would rather have a JDM engine. This is probably just because i like JDM for being asain lol xD.

So.. Anymore tips, advice, things i need to know?

Sure, read the stickies. There are only about a hundred pages of information on swaps scattered all throughout the forums, and all of the good ones are conglomerated into the tech FAQ sticky.

Out of curiosity, what the hell motor do you have that's carb'd?

use the search, your question is about as vague as it comes. If you do get any replies, expect

what do you want from the car?

It's a 1.3.. I didnt even know these were made but.. Apearantly they are xD

Bear in mind that you'll need to swap the gas tank, fuel lines, fuel pump and the interior wiring and engine harness from a '92 - '95 fuel injected civic. None of which is particularly fun.

Thanks for the advice. Was at a meeting yesterday and got a lot more info there as well. Seems to me that i'm gonna have to save up for something good first. Let's just hope i can bare this engine untill then xD

Sell the car and buy a fuel injected model from 92-00. With all the time and money required for a good swap from carb to fuel injection, it's much easier to change the car.

I hate to say it, but this is your answer, OP. The amount of time, money, and effort involved in swapping to OBD1 PGM-FI would definitely not be worth it.

I had that motor in my '84 hatchback. Not a bad motor, but factory rated at only 63hp, its probably a bit too small for anything that weighs more than 1800lbs.

My guess is that the bogging going up hills is a fuel starvation problem unrelated to the motor. You probably have debris in your gas tank or something.

Considering it's a carb'd motor, it's more likely that his carb sprayers are clogged.

Where can i find these? i'm not really well with carb engine's. i mean. i know where the carb is ofcourse. But where do i take these out?

edit-
Btw. the full conversion in the end for a FI motor and the costs that come with it in the end do not matter to me. At this moment i'm not in a position to do this, but i'm getting a considerable amount of money soon (sold the house) and i'm thinking of using that for my car.

The size of the project will be huge ofcourse, but i actualy like that. plus it give's me alot more knowledge about the car ofcourse.

I haven't played around enough with Honda carbs to answer that question. Honestly, you might want to ask in the EF section - those guys are more likely to know about carbs.

USDM EFs weren't carbed. The last year for a USDM carbed Civic was 1987.

As far as the carb goes. get a carb rebuild kit. The jets might be plugged up with varnish. Or the floats may be sinking (if they're brass or plastic shake them to see if they're full of gas, if so they're bad. If they're styrofoam see if they sink in gas) clean everything up good with carb cleaner and put it back together. Make sure you screw all the mixture screws in before disassembly counting the turns while doing so before removing them so you can put them back where they were. Also, mark the vacuum lines, IIRC a lot of those carbed Hondas had a lot of spaghetti.

Possible, but the fact that it happens on inclines casts a doubt in my mind that it could be the jets, or "sprayers" as you called them.

Either way, its a debris or fouled fuel issues originating from the gas tank.

You can replace filters and rebuild carburetors all you want, if you only treat the symptoms and never get to the root of the problem, its going to keep happening. It would be stupid for him to do a motor swap and end up with the same problems.
