1991 DX Hatch - Fuel Problem
I was told by the previous owner, that when you get below a half tank in this car, it will start to stutter and the gas gauge will float from half to empty rapidly. He also states that he was never able to get more than 6 gallons of gas into it. Is there something I'm missing here or is there something seriously wrong? I'd like to remedy the problem before I take a 500+ mile trip and it shuts off on me while I am in the middle of nowhere..
Could it be as simple as the sending unit, the fuel filter, (both?) or the float in the tank being off by miles in itself? Any advice is accepted at this point. (I'm also thinking there might be something some kid stuffed in the tank before the previous owner got it, I don't want to think that far down the rabbit hole but my mind does wander a bit..)

Does the car shut off at half of a tank like it is out of fuel?
Either way, I would drop the tank, check out the tube that connects the fuel pump to the chassis that holds it in place. I had this happen to me when I placed the hose too far down and it started sucking air when I would get below 3/4 of a tank.

Its the fuel sock. It more than likely fell/broke off.
Get it replaced with one from Advanced Auto part # FS121 made by Airtex, dont buy anything other than this one because the other ones are not faced/mounted correctly.

Thanks for the advice, ill get it on jackstands asap lol.
Dephtone, yes the car starts to sputter below a half tank. Like it's losing fuel, but at the same time the gauge floats like crazy

Well i started with looking as to why it sits so low and why the front end wobbles. They heated and clamped the springs together on it. Does anyone want a picture of this crime? lol
