I am hoping to get some information on safety on these cars.... I am assuming the back seats have both the shoulder and lap seat belts...... the reason I'm asking and this may be illogical, however, I commute my kids to school 120 miles a day.... my husband was commuting them last school year in 83 Civic and had a major accident wear he sustained minor injuries but both children had major injuries and my youngest almost didn't make it. My car is gas guzzler so we are looking to get a different car that is more economical... we don't have a lot of cash but did find the 87 civic for less then a grand.

Any information would be helpful to me as far as safety is concerned.

Remember that small cars will not be as safe as newer small cars.... If you are in cali, the smog check is required from the seller.... it can be a nightmare to smog an older car... in $$$ and time.
If you troll the net for unfixed smog... they are legion....
Be safe.

 

Not the best choice for the kids, especially considering they've already been injured in a similar car.

 

There are plenty of cars with 4 cyl engines that can get the same mpg that are in a larger more safe body. Commuting that fair in a tin can with kids isnt very responsible imo.

 

i wouldnt roll my kids in a 3rd gen. the car buckles just from being put on a lift. i cant imagine what would happen if you wrecked one.
