Rebuild or Low Mileage Used Engine
Ok I have the option to either buy a used d15b7 engine for 800 installed with 130000 k on it from a junk yard. or do my first rebuild on my own engine. my piston rings are fried, but my head is in great shape. so how hard is it to replace the piton rings, do my head gasket, timing belt, and waterpump, so basically a full rebuild. this would be my first time doing anything like this, but i have always wanted to learn, plus i can get the parts at cost, so it will be half the price of the new engine. i would prefer to do the rebuild so any help would be great. tips, or a step by step guide if anyone is feeling really generous.
800 installed is not bad, only if it really runs and comes with a warranty. For my old D16y7 I estimated $600 without fluids and such for rebuild. This was just for parts (rings, Timing belt kit, gasket kit, etc.) and deglazing the cylinders my self. Expect more if you have the engine machined professionally. If you are going to pull the engine out, and have the money, do a swap or something. D16Z6 would not be that bad, or even B-series. If you stay non-vtec, you should not have to switch your harness.
You're better off buying a low mileage used JDM engine honestly. Junkyard engines are pretty hit and miss (especially D15B7s) JDM Source in Alberta is reasonably close to you and I know several people who have bought from them, all had good experiences.
