Icon2 CRX stock tachometer reads double

My 1989 CRX Si tachometer is reading exactly 2X the engine RPM. Engine seems ok otherwise, just getting this annoying instrument error.

Anyone seen this before or have a suggestion on where to start troubleshooting?

Thanks!

Maybe a bad igniter unit.

Thanks for the responses. The Igniter is one of the few items on this car that has actually failed in the 23 years I've had it, but if it is "bad" wouldn't that cause some other symptom besides the tach to read double? When it failed before it was pretty obvious as the car would not start. Easy enough to replace, but it's $60 -$80 for the part. Are you saying that it is failing? If so are there any other checks I could make to verify before replacing?

Thanks!

If you have a tach or frequency function on your multimeter, you can test whether you get the same reading as the tach in the cluster. If so, I think the igniter unit may be bad.
