Default My first attempt at a turbo manifold.

I bought a TIG welder a few months ago and have basically, through trial and error, have taught myself to weld aluminum and stainless. So I decided to build a manifold. I never seen this design before, but the runner design and length are similar to a Ramhorm. Im gonna call it the Medusa manifold. Hahaha.

All I have left is to decide what wastegate i want to use and it'll be ready for install.

Lmk what you think. And remember i havent been welding long and this is a first attempt. lol

Maybe should have started on something a little easier to weld, but your bold and that's not a bad thing lol. I built something similar to that not too long ago, was a real pain in the ***!

What amperage were you welding at? You're a little undercut all of the way around, you want to try and make sure you're pushing enough filler to be level/bumped above the material where your welds are. It should hold ok, it's just somewhere to improve for next time.

Like SovXietday says, a bit undercut. Are the flanges flat after welding them? what machine are you using?

Yeah I have alot to learn, I noticed a few things that I was doing wrong or would like to change next. But was fun and honestly not as hard as I thought it would be. I want to sign up a welding course soon. But like I said, all in fun.

Looks good man.... You did a good job. I really like doing fab work. I just need to get me a good tig welder and learn how to tig.

Welds look a lil undercut and hot, I like the design a lot , did you test fit the turbo to make sure the compressor housing will clear the runners? But on the welds nothing a second pass cant fix, remember practice makes perfect!

Yeah I think I had the amperage too low and it was torching the metal a little until it started melting. The manifold fits excellent, the top runner is a little close to the valve cover but its not bad. My next one will tilt just a hair downward. Thanks everyone for the comments and advice. This is a learning experience, so any help is appreciated.

can't tell you anything about the manifold welds other than they are undercut because you wire wheeled all of the haz off... but the welds with visible haz are too hot

Noob questions : what does undercut mean? And, how can i stop it from getting too hot? I wait till i see a puddle then i touch it with filler. What do i need to do? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Undercut can be from wrong torch angle, to hot, and your speed of travel. You just need to watch the weld pool closely and watch it "wash" in.
Can't really give any TIG specific tips, those are just what I found while stick welding and MIG welding on structural steel.
Overall I'm impressed by your first try though! What's your setup?

too avoid undercut add more wire and use less heat. what rod are you using

also welds are contaminated a bit. polish that material/

did you backpurge?

Undercut is basically when you take away material but don't refill it. See how the welds on your runners are indented? You want the weld to sit slightly raised or level with the surface.

Just out of curiosity, are you using a gas lense on your torch? What size filler rod are you using, and what Amperage are you welding at?

Overheating is usually caused by too much amperage, or moving too slowly for that amperage.
