hydrolocked LS, part 2:what direction to take now??????
ok, for all that know I hydro'd my LS last week. Heart broken yes, sad you bet, and looking for answers. So now i am faced with what direction to take from here. Yes i know there is TONS of possibilities.
first, im a student with no money so all this is on a personal loan from parents.
a few ideas: full GSR swap. Not really into this idea, mainly based on cost and that as soon as i do it iwill want to start doing more mods.
--full LS swap. Complete engine, tranny, axles and ecu swap from a newer LS. This was my original intent. This being alot cheaper then a GSR engine. But then there is the concern of going obd1 or 2.
--LS shortblock. This is the most appealing idea based on price alone. It can be done for less then 1K and as far as i know would bolt up fine.
again, as far as i know my cylinder head is fine.
Another idea i toyed around with was getting a B20 shortblock. has anyone ever done this? What are the bolt up concerns if any? Would this be worth doing if i were to keep the stock b20 internals? What would be the cost of replacing the stock internals that could be solid to 7K everyday.
For those that just want to post and flame please dont bother. I dont have the money to go big and this is my everyday car with 140K on the clock. It was running great prior ro accident.
any help is appriciated.

I would go with the B20 short block if you don't want to spend a whole lotta cash. My friend dropped a B20 shortblock and slapped his LS head back on his integra and turboed it and is making a lot of power now. You could later do a B20/Vtec setup and turbo it or just B20 turbo. It makes a lot of torque and a lot of power. I would go with that. GSR swap it also a good idea, but then you gotta do the ECU and the tranny. I wouldn't do the full LS swap no matter what. If you have no other choice do the B20....you already have a LS ECU, and LS tranny so it should work out just fine. Only difference between B18b and B20 is that the B20 is 2.0 vs 1.8. Hope that helps.
found a b20 longblock at http://www.sofast.com for 1300-1400. How does this sound? Any other concerns to be aware of?????
i bet you could find it for cheaper....say 800 or so. Look in junk yards and classifieds, instead of looking on site that just sells swaps...they're always going to be more expensive.
go with the b20. someone correct me if im wrong but isnt a b20 just a b18b just with a bigger bore? i would assume that the bigger bore wouldnt affect how high it can rev. i rev my ls to 7k about once a day never had any problems

I hydro-locked my 01 GS-R last week as well. I got lucky though, cause i was going slow (maybe 2k RPM) and I didn't bend any valves or anything. I had it towed to the dealership where I used to work and they took out my plugs and we cranked the engine, pumping the water out. We blew the rest out with an air gun, put it all back together, and then cranked the engine until the water cleared the fuel injection, and then it puttered to life after a minute or so of cranking.
We changed the oil, and the car is fine now.
I also installed one of those damned bypass valves. I don't like it (my car is quieter now) but i dont like worrying about 6k or so of damage either.
It will all be ok when I can afford a super-charger.

I don't have an opinion on where you should go, but I know exactly how you feel. My 98 B18C1 was ruined and now with my new C1 block I'm still having small troubles, which should hopefully be resolved. Life is just a learning experience, some experiences harder than others...do what you feel is the best and most practical.
wow....on a 2001...damn. I have had a bypass on mine for along time. When i take the half off of it and turn it into a short ram its hella loud...how does the bypass make it quiet? and yes the ls head is a direct fit...i asked.
its not ALOT quieter i guess, its just like, in second gear i can barely hear the secondaries opening, and cant really feel it either.
when you make it into a short-ram are you just running it w/out a filter?
The bypass makes it quieter because that piece of foam rubber is removing a shitload of vibration. Since the whole intake used to vibrate, that made a lot of noise by itself (like an acoustic guitar box) and the sound from the engine traveled out unfettered as well.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who did this to a car. I did almost the exact thing to my old GSR. The water shoting out of the cylinders is an awseom sight to see i might add. Maxx, try this man. Id be willing to bet it would work on your car if you just give it some TLC. If you need more explaination on how to do something like this than just IM me.
oh ok....well my bypass is where the ram air would be cut. What i do is take the cold air part off and the bypass off and then put the filter up where the bypass used to be. I do this when it gets really rainy or in the snow.
