Default grinding sound on engine start

sounds like a transmission grinding off teeth after it cranks over when it starts
Heres what you would hear if you were here:
"crank crank :grind:vrooom "
the sound is right when the engine turns the crank on its own.
Someone said "have ya tried to start the car while its running..?"
(hehe yes once - who hasn't)
"that's it"
So my starter's grinding when it.. starts? what?
thanks hondatech'ers ~ Peter

check your rotor in your distributor it may be going bad.

You might have to replace the starter. Normally the pinion gear at the end of the starter returns back to it's sitting position, which is down. you might want to ask around. it normally cost $50 for a remanufactured starter with exchange, just hold on to your receipts.

I would say check the starter first as well... It is an easier fix and cheaper too, best place to start...

no clue why that would cause it... ? reasoning ?
starts perfect, just makes that noise, revs to 7500 without hesitation or needle bounce

sounds like the fly wheel ring gear are worn in 4 spots i bet. if it turns over the starter is still good. but when u change the flywheel ring gear its a good idea to change the starter also so you break in the teeth. so its a matching set and will last longer also.

sounds to me like the starter doesn't know when it has finished it's job. try taking it to a parts place that tests starters to see if it is a starter problem.

I'd also have to go with the starter. That's a normal sign of it going out. It either grinds like that or does the "clicking".
