03 Civic 3sstage Vtec speedo and tach malfunction
Hello one and all. I am on here looking for some info for one of my friends. After about 1.5 years of her car being broke down and in the shop it went out on the open road late last night. What i am wanting to find out is that her speedo and tach are acting up. What they do is bounce around. speedo will go from 0-120mph. there is no set time or something that has to happen for it to do this exept the car running. The tach also does the same thing as well. Any help would be nice. Thank you in advance for any help from anybody.
Look in the FAQ's for the instrument cluster self-diagnostic. It may show something, it may not. Either way, the only way to fix the instrument cluster in this gen is to replace it. You do not want to know how much Honda charges for a new cluster. Check here for salvage clusters: http://www.car-part.com/ Usually costs about $20 to ship.
The cheapest way to test it as well is to drive the car with a diagnostic tool attaced to the OBD2 port to see if you get the same erratic readings ( eliminating the vehicle speed sensor or the cluster itself. The Blue wire for your cluster could be chaffing against another "positive" wire causing the speedometer to spike up as you describe it.
