Default problems after replacing d16y7

So i replaced my d16y7, with a junkyard 110k engine. Put on a new alternator, pulled the o2 sensors from the old car, everything went in fine, however i have some issues..

1, the distributor on the new engine had a single yellow wire cut, so i twisted that up, tapped it,

2. i don't have a code reader, but it has a cel.

3. it idles odd, but generates massive massive heat... the header was steaming of a drop of water after about 40-50 seconds of running.

4. after i ran it again after about a minute it went into limp mode i think, and the idle climbed and fell. Biggest thing is just the raw heat so fast... somethings not right.

How would you go about fixing this... debugging the problem. I'm screwed if i don't get this fixed by tonight.

So far tonight, my thoughts where replace the plugs from the old engine, to the new one..
unplug the lower o2 sensor and see if coolant is getting into the block?

switch distributors trying to eyeball it as close as possible, then if it idles fine bring it a shop to get the timing set...?

the block is a 96 d16y7, i have a 98 d16y7/civic dx.

Pull the code you don't need a reader

What does your temp gauge say? How hot does it get.Its possible that you bought an engine that had a head gasket issue or cracked head, and thats why it ended up in the junkyard.or is it running crappy= did you mark and are you sure the sensors are hooked up right on the Intake--not sure if on a y7 sensor connectors are similar I know for sure the IAT is not similar to any. And I woould reuse my old y7 dizz and not the one with the cut wire.

K, updates, i got the cel, it was the air temp sensor which had a small slice i would have never caught, thats fixed, cell is off.

found a split vacum line to the fuel regular to nthe back of the intake, fixed that..

heat issue.. i had air in the coolant, let it idle with the cap off, temps seem fine, idles... but now... a surge..

Its start fine, runs well for about a minute then goes into a rhythmic up and down idle.

Thanks again guys, almost there !!

bump...

I tried letting the car rev until the fans kicked on, then disconnected the front grey switch, nothing, thinking this is not the ivac, then i tried unplugging the rear switch, and it idled low, but fine..

so i'm thinking i should just switch the entire manifold from the old engine and put that on the new engine... any thoughts?

had a problem very close to this, except with a d15b7, replaced spark plugs, map tps sensor. it still had the idle creep and drop. tried everything in the book, compression test, shift light, adv. time it, retard time it. i couldn't get it to run right what so ever! gave up...... Revisited it the other day dinked around with the fitv (fast idle thermo valve) bam problem solved.

if your speedo is jumping up and down, id check your connection make sure it snaps in place when you connect the harness to the speed sensor
