Default 1997 Ls 5 speed - randomly can't shift out of gear?

Hey all. My roommate is having trouble with his 1997 integra ls. It's a 5 speed. The motor runs great, but he is having transmission problems it appears. I test drove his car and the problem is random, but occurs often. Mostly happens when shifting out of 4th gear, but sometimes happens when shifting out of other gears as well. It ONLY happens when shifting out of gear, never going into gear.

What happens is i go to push in the clutch to shift from 4th to 5th gear and the clutch pedal goes down a couple inches and stops. Like it's hanging up on something, or like hitting a wall. If i push extremely hard the clutch pedal will go to the floor, but i can't shift out of gear without forcing it into neutral. So it kinda feels like it's not engaging the clutch when this problem occurs. After forcing the shift lever into neutral i can then again shift like normal to the next gear. Never any problems getting into gear, just getting out of gear to neutral. It occurs more often in the higher gears, mostly shifting out of 4th and 5th. Sometimes when shifting out of second i hear a popping sound which sounds like it's coming from the clutch lever area, and not the transmission area. When the popping sound occurs there is slight resistance on the pedal, which occurs only for a split second.

I replaced the clutch master cylinder, and checked the manual transmission fluid. Any thoughts on what else it could be? I'm trying to save myself the trouble of pulling the transmission. I tried much google searching but i can't seem to find anyone that has had the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Wow thanks for all the help, don't everyone respond at one time. (total sarcasm) Close this thread and ban my account. This place has gotten stale.

Like your Civic, this form can move slowly, so don't get your panties in a knot.

Sounds like your problem is in the clutch release, release fork maybe, or the slave cylinder push rod.

If the clutch pedal is getting stuck it is unlikely a transmission problem.

Check the pedal, make sure there is nothing getting in the way or nothing is worn out and binding. 94
