Default excessive play in shifter

i got a 91 civic hatch, and ive noticed while driving it that ieven in gear, the shifter still feels like its in neutral. now it does shift into all gears just fine, and i can tell where the gears are and all, i just want it to be *tighter* i guess? like it to not have so much wobble to the shifter itself. i got some new shifter stabilizer bushings JIC, but havent installed them because the ones on the car look decent. any suggestions to solve this problem?

if you also have play up and down it could be the actual bushing for the ball part of the shifter

You have to rebuild where the shifter bar meets the nipple comming from the transmission (the one with the bitch pin). You need to gring the end of the pin off, pound out with a punch, take all the stuff out of the joint.. Get a 13mm socket that you dont need or want (harbor frieght sockets work well) A buch of I think its 15/16 washers and a 2 1/2 bolt and some high temp grease. Its pretty easy and works great, I just did 2 of them for diffrent friends. If you take off the arm you will see the joint just flops around and should move but with resistance. Its pretty commin on older hondas..

had the chance to get under there and check it out, the shift rod is just floppin around where it goes into the trans at, ive looked around and ive heard of it being fixed by replacing the shaft seal??? its like 3 bucks and i also seen about rebuilding it with the 13m socket too, but all the pictures arent available and they are vague *** instructions. any links with clear directions and pics that work would help and any other feedback too. thanks.

one day i was driving and all of the sudden i had lots of play in mine. after driving for like 2 or 3 more hours i couldnt get out of 4th. turns out the bolt that holds on the shift linkage stabalizer bar came out. but i was shifting alot durring that. maybe yours is out and its just moving the stabalizer around but the bar hasnt actually fallen down yet. i would check cause i had to drive home in 4th holdning my shifter as far back into 4th as i could so the bar didnt scrap. it was a rough ride in 4th...

sorry for a delay in a response, works been killin me with overtime. i got under there and had a closer look, i still have a bitch pin, but where the joint goes over the nipple on the transmission is just floppin around. everything else on the shift rod looks great and isnt loose whatsoever(shocking). but im probably going to replace the pin and see what happens.

I had the same issue when i put my gsr in my 91 sedan. I couldnt find the pin so i use a bolt and it was tight. And my shifter was like it was in neutral when it was in gear. Later i ended up finding the pin with the old linkage, put it in and PRESTO!!! It was like new. Never had a problem since.
