I know its a petty thing to be concerned with but I have been running real low trying to see if the light will come on and its got to be where it should have come on by now

I took the cluster out and swapped the seat belt light with it and its still not on

If the bulb is good what else would cause this?

the gauge itself operates correctly

Both cars:

Remove rear seat and cover to the fuel pump. Unplug the 3P connector for the sending unit, which has Grn/Yel, Blk, and Yel/Blk wires. Use a paperclip or wire to jump the Grn/Yel wire terminal to the Blk wire wire terminal in the connector.

When you turn the key to ON(II), does the cluster low fuel indicator light turn on?

 

Ron i did as you instructed the light did come on. I also noticed a white goo in the connections
Looked to have been applied deliberatly.

 

that would be dielectric grease, used to prevent corosion. last owner probably put a little too much.

 

As mentioned, ignore the goo. It's fine.

If you have run the fuel tank to less than 1 gallon of being empty and the light has not turned on, then replace the fuel sending unit in the fuel tank.

 

do I need a 99-00 civic fuel sending unit?
or will anyone from a 96-00 work?

does the trim matter?
