Default what should i do to a transmission before installing

ok so i have an si trans that i have been keeping around because the sincros in 2 3 4 and 5 have been acting up and a bent shift fork in 3rd. old tranny (200 plus i believe) and i helped a few friends learn a 5 speed so it got pretty beat. but anyways the time has come to replace it. i already have my old trans out and i was just curious what i should do to my new trans before i put it in. i know for a fact that it ran amazing 3 years ago when pulled and it has had rags in the holes so nothing got in. but im just curious what should i do if anything before installing. like do axle seals go bad from drying out? and when its in should i change tranny fluid maybe a few hundred miles later just to make sure if anything was in it that its out? just trying not to have to drop the tanny again. its a bitch to do and i dropped in on my chest today when my hand slipped.

thanks for the help guys

check for bad seals and bearings. and look for cracks or exessive wear. it would suck to get a trans in and then have a leak.
