Tranny leaking fluid, no visible cracks?
I blew my gsr trans a year or 2 ago and am just now getting around to looking at it. The guy I bought it from bought it with a bad case, put a new case on and put new bearings etc. in. He was not a professional, but the guy knew what he was doing. This trans pulled harder than any trans ive ever had and shifted smooth too, I was really pissed when it blew. Anyway, it managed to leak all the fluid out somehow and at the time I just set it aside and got another one and assumed the casing was cracked or something, but I just took a good look at it and it appears to be intact. The axle seal looks new too. Is there a way of pressure testing it or something to see if its cracked or find where it was leaking from? Im trying to see if I can salvage the case, but im a little worried about ever using it again without being sure its not going to happen again as a result of the case.

Not sure I've heard of anyone pressure testing a trans housing - so unsure if that can be done.
If not, I would suggest tearing it down - removing gear stacks, diff, and case bearings. Put all plugs back in (1/2" plug over c-clip with HondaBond, 12mm detent bolts with washers, etc.). Get a plug for the axle openings and fill each housing up with water to see if it leaks at all.
I would think the casings are fine, and it was just a detent washer not tightened or an axle seal just ever so slightly too loose, or just a small drip via a poor Honda Bond seal between the cases.

Re: Tranny leaking fluid, no visible cracks?
I have a simular problem except mine is on the vehicle. Recently I removed tranny due to clutch failure.
1. I had trouble getting mid shaft out do to other parts i installed. anyway 300 miles after new clutch on ITR i have a leak on Tranns. cover that goes into oil pan. I have a manual of tranny but what are these detent washers that leak.
I have had axles out 2 to 3 times. if I cut a axle seal in tranny would it leak down to the tranny support to engine area ( access plate to flywheel)
I just read where those should be replaced and I thought they were more of dust covers not to prevent fluid leakage. I am talking about teaspoon full that i can see. also not 100 percent is tranny fluid. I will try and get a sample.

It is possible to damage them when taking the axles in and out. They are fairly easy to change with the axles out and inexpensive. Clean the area up and and monitor where the leak may be coming from and go from there to see if that is the source of your leak.
