Default New Em1 owner

Hello Honda-Tech.
I just recently bought a 2000 Ebp civic si for a month now and i love it. Its kind of high mileage though. I bought it at 146,000, but i got it for $2800. I thought it was a very good deal and I became the 3rd owner of it. I think the previous owner kind of beat the si though as i noticed the 3rd gear pops out once in awhile and 2nd gear grind if i shift to 2nd at high rpm. I'm new to the honda world and just recently started to research a little bit more about honda engines and cars. Owning the si for over a month, i did bought some toys for it. I bought a aem intake, skunk2 intake manifold and 70mm throttle body, dc sports 4-2-1 headers, and a apexi 2s2 exhaust system. I love the sound of my ws2 exhaust. It's so quiet at low rpms which is great for daily driving and when vtec kicks in, it growls and sounds so sweet. Its an awesome car but i was sad that I couldn't beat my buddy's ek hatch with an ls swap. It has a b18a1 with a gsr throttle body and mugen type r exhaust. Is there anyway I could beat him without spending too much money for mods?

Bench racing is not permitted in these forums. If you want to inquire about how to go fast, that's fine. But you're obviously talking about street racing and simultaneously providing us with arbitrary goals.

FYI, bolt ons don't do a whole lot on small displacement engines. The b18 has a little more torque than your b16, so that might explain why he's getting the jump on you.

Any b-series isn't exactly quick in stock form or with bolt ons. You really need some pretty serious mods (Cams, pistons, etc) to get significant power gains. If you're comfortable with tearing the engine down to go faster, that's where you need to start with a b16 anyways.

Sounds like you need to make sure your transmission doesn't die first, might be time to buy a rebuild kit.

There's an FAQ for that.

Guide to Answer the Common Question: Just Bought a Civic! How Do I Make It Faster?

Also, drain and refill your transmission with Honda MTF. That will help, if not solve, your grinding and popping problems. Seriously though, like Lib said, fix the transmission before you worry about how (not)fast your car can go.
