Default Alternator chirping like a bird

The alternator on my 94 accord 4 cyl. sounds like a bird. Does anyone know what would make this happen? The alternator light is not on but the last alternator that sounded like this soon after the light came on and the alternator went bad. That was only a couple of months back.

Is the belt old? How tight is the belt? If you have an old glazed belt it will slip even if you tighten the begesus out of it. This excessive tension will kill the alternator bearings.

Thanks Mike, Yes the belt is pretty old and I do have it pretty tight so I will try a new belt. I think its probably to late for the alternator though if its the bearings going bad. I have a lifetime warranty on it. I wonder if chirping would be covered under the warranty?

Let us know if you fixed it by replacing the belt. Had this issue once with a co-worker's CB7 Accord and thought it might be pulley even though I had the belt tension tighten.

Will do,but I'm afraid I may have reined the bearings in the alt by having so much tension on the belt. I should have replaced the 2 belts when I replaced my timing belt. I'm ashamed to say how many miles I think they have on them. I do change my oil and filter every time the service reminder turns orange though.

Depends on who you got your warranty through but if you have a lifetime warranty on the alternator, especially if it still gives you any trouble at all after replacing the belt, definitely talk to your local store for whoever your warranty is through. Where I work, we mostly exchange things if the customer thinks its bad even if it tests fine on our machine (we have a separate page to put in "other customer concerns" ). Unless they're jerks about it usually customer satisfaction will be more important than whether the alternator is actually bad. Especially if all you want is an exchange not a refund.
