Default 97 Accord...hot days + AC = car shut-off

This problem started about 6 months ago coming home from work. In general, if it's hot (80+) and I'm running my AC (low or high) the car has a habit of just losing power and shutting off. It will do this with no consideration as to whether you're sitting at a traffic light or doing 60mph down the road. It just loses power.

When this issue initially started, if I was traveling down the road the car would lose power but turn itself back on within 2 seconds. Now, if I lose power traveling down the road I simply have to coast to a stop. If I try to restart the car immediately, it turns over but immediately shuts off. After 2 or 3 minutes it will start and stay on allowing me to get where I'm going without AC.

It will not do this when the temperature is under 75 (like in the mornings). It won't do this if you have the AC turned off. Clearly, it's tied to the temperature and the use of the AC. I have had a local mechanic replace 2 fans relating to the AC he thought contained the issue but apparently that did not work since I'm still experiencing the issue.

Any information?

Could be the realy, some caveman tests you can do.

I'd also look into the ing switch - electrical part.

How much testing are you willing to do?

Have the AC systems refrigerant level checked. A low AC charge can intermittently shut off and on the AC compressor and will create a large parasitic drag on the engine when this occurs. For some reason the compressor simply stops turning rather than the clutch disengaging like it should. This will cause stalling and or jerking. This will continue until the charge becomes low enough that the compressor simply will no longer engage.

I have an 02 EX, standard, 140K I've had the same thing happen twice. Both times in heavy stop and go, one of those with A/C, the other without. It just loses power. I don't remember for sure if it died completely with all lights on, or just died slowly. Anyway, 1st time it died in the middle of traffic and I sat there until I was able to restart and limp along. I did that 4 or 5 times, it got better each time. I was finally able to continue on. The second time (yesterday on 95S) I sat and waited for a tow. While waiting, after about 20 minutes, I was able to start it to back up to clear a space for the tow truck. Waited almost 2 hours, go towed. Got it off the truck and was able to drive the last mile to destination. No problem. After visiting for a few hours, I drove home with no problem at all. No traffic, about 165 miles.

My temp gauge NEVER EVER goes above half scale. I suspect I have a problem there. It doesn't overheat and never shows hot. At first I thought this might be heat related and I can't see it. But after reading this and other posts, I'm going to look at this main relay thing.

If you've managed to read through this whole thing, I'd love to hear your thoughts.........
