Default 1996 Civic ex/stock d16y8 starting problems

A friend of mine drove his civic to autozone and when he was about to leave, it failed to start . We first thought it was the battery and jump started it and it ran fine until he decided to turn off his car to put in some gas.... then we push started it and it stayed on but i had to keep my foot on the gas even when we were at a dead stop the entire ride to my casa. Do you guys know what it could be ?

The battery is relocated to the trunk but the fusebox is still in the engine bay.

During this drive, did you have anything drawing power other than the motor? A/C, stereo, headlights, interior lighting, anything?

it wouldnt be the alternator because the battery stays charged at 13 volts all the time. but it does have starting problems and i am guna take his starter off and get it tested at autozone .

Ensure that you aren't getting a loose or bad ground somewhere. This can cause a lot of the same symptoms that you are describing. Because of the battery location you have to be more conscious of this.

If you can push start it and not start with the key, a simple but overlooked cause could be the clutch safety switch. If the previous owner enjoyed harassing the wiring harness as you described it is possible that this switch could be loosened or wires cut and spliced back together.

hope that helps

The clutch safety switch is a simple switch that is bolted to the pedal assembly. When you push the clutch in and the switch closes the circuit it closes the circuit for the starter signal. A simple device used to make sure you aren't starting the car with it in gear where it is going to lunge forward unknowingly.

Far from a guarantee but worth a shot if you say this previous owner was doing crazy science in the wiring harness.
