has anyone actually used one of those catalytic converter cleaners? did it work?...i usually run my test pipe and only use the cat for smog but this year i just left it on the whole time,its the original stock one since 1994, it passed smog last year but since its so old and my car was idling weird for a while i wanna make sure its still good for smog these coming up months. thanks

 

Have you pulled and examined the catalytic converter? Is it clogged (e.g.: can't see light through it from one end to the other) or otherwise damaged? In general, once these fail, there's no going back, though I did manage to clear a clogged one once by blowing it out with 150 PSI compressed air from the outlet side to the inlet side, I'm pretty sure that's the exception rather than the norm.

 

Saw a vid the other day about either taking it off and soaking it in soapy water or adding a gallon of lacquer thinner to the gas tank when it was half full and then driving about 150 miles. However, it's all speculation since you don't know it will fail o not.

 

i actually havent it checked it out im just assuming it might be bad cuz my ride was running bad for a while n the cat is so old. ..car doesnt smoke n i dont abuse it i rarely even hit vtec....but i guess i should check it out before jumping to conclusions

 

ive done the whole denatured alcohol thing at the time of smog but ive never actually seen done or tried out what your talking about,ill see whats up when i take it off

ive actually heard of local ppl doing that on smog days n it supposably significantly decreases their emissions,ive never tried n probly never will,i have done the denatured alcohol before n that some times dropped it way way down
