Default Li'l HELP for a Newbie??? TIA

I have a 96 Accord LX (4 cyl non-VTEC) and plan to replace the timing belt (and other parts while in there...). Being very much the newbie to this site, i tried searching and didnt quite figure it out. If anyone can help with any of these (probably annoying) newbie questions, i'd be very grateful.

1. What else to replace when doing timing belt? (balance shaft belts, accessory belts, water pump, tensioners..???).

2. Best place to get the best manual (Haynes?) to do this work myself? Best price? Does this website have a section with a how-to writeup to do this job yourself?

3. Best sources to get parts (belts, water pump), either locally (in-store) or online? Prices to expect to pay for parts?

4. What is the average total cost if i went to a dealer (or shop)?? (just in case i back out...)

5. Any special tools required for the job, that i'm not likely to already have?

6. How much time can i expect to spend on the job, with 2 people, a lift, the right tools, and a repair manual?

Any other insight from experienced honda wrenchers would be great. Thanks!

Best manual is not the Haynes, but the Honda shop book which you can buy at your local dealer, this is a true tear down of your car,

How many miles are on the motor,

Check your owners manual for maintanance, and see what is recommended for your car,

I would change out all the fluids, belts, plugs, and check compression, your suspension, ect,

It should take a good sunday to do it all, and you should buy all the replacement parts and get familiar with your car before attempting anything,

Unfortunatly there aren't that many guys on this board that know the accord in and out, Seems they care more about aftermarket rims and lowering kits

Default Thanks...

Car has about 77K miles. I forget the recommended timing belt interval in the manual, but i plan on doing it before winter regardless. Might sell the car soon, so i want it done. I already keep up with oil changes, plugs, cap/rotor, filters, etc. I definitely want to familiarize myself before attempting (thats why i came to this forum).

this board seems kinda slow, very few replies. Funny observation- i think you may be right about the focus here. BUT, thats kinda what these forums are for- the enthusiast side of things, meaning aftermarket. I belong to the Audiworld forum, which actually strikes a good balance between tech and aftermarket info. My knowledge is spent on my A4, the accord is my wife's car. Its eye-opening (and frustrating) to come here and know NOTHING, but i'm patient with newbies on Audiworld, so i've built some good kharma....

Thanks for the info!

Yes.

Only 77k? The timing belt interval is 90k. Actually your waterpump should be good for about 135k+. If you were going to sell it, you *could* cheap-out and not do anything. But if it was to a relative...well...might as well do it. It's hard to say what shops would charge...really depends on the area. In the San Gabriel Valley...if you look around for the asian shops, you'll see about $450 for everything (t-belt/balancer belt/all belts/WP/new tensioners bearings/new seals) using Honda parts. Try to find a place where the owners are the mechanics...good deals...

If your wife is driving the car, I wouldn't change the timing belt until 90K as instructed in the manual, She probably treats it well and doesn't abuse it.
If it is the F2.3 and you still want to install the timing belt, PM or post your email, and I will send you a run down, But honestly if you are selling it soon, I wouldn't change out the belt. I have about 55K on mine, so I have some time before I change my belt, Goodluck,

Audiworld is great, I have been to a few meets in the LA area, My friend has an a4 as well, and wanted to install a blow off valve (relief valve), everyone on audiworld told him it was a bad idea?, You probably know more about that, I have seen a few of the cars running at lacr, 1 audi ran 13.5's all day, full interior,
He did have many mods done, including Front mount IC, Injectors, Stand alone ECu, Sounds like to much money for not enough go power?

For the others that were offended
I might be a "newbie" on the board, but from what I read, majority of the posts relate to lowering springs and aftermarket rims,

I have a 11 sec, weekend car that I built from the ground up so yeah I do know what I'm talking about, Most of you guys haven't even experienced a 13 sec run,

For one example, people recommend different springs and what not, without having any type of real testing, such as slalom times, or autoX times between different sprinks/strut combos. Blanket statements, I listen to tests and dyno charts, not to what you like and what you think is right.

On that note, if you got offended by the earlier post , you probably are one of the people I'm describing, so thanks for making an example.

Wow.... If you "really" do have an 11second car then i'm guessing you should post the pics on here to prove it. If not then your just lying

Most (80%) of the guys in here know alot about Accords. Next time don't make yourself look dumb by saying something like "You guys don't know the Accords inside out"

speak for yourself, i have built 3 mr2's (sw20's) and one wrx so far personally none of each ran more than a 12.6 in the quarter after i was done with it. so here is what i think of your wonderful statement....

you have some serious nerve son, i suggest you go in the corner and count to ten
