Default smartest way to start a build off

i know this is a newbie question but instead of just buying random parts until i accumulate everything to start my build id rather do it in a organized fashion so input on where i should start would be appreciated. like should i build my motor first than turbo kit or what. thanks.

Know what your goals are and build it correctly for that. Be prepared. Do your research and only buy parts once, not ones that you will have to end up replacing.

if you want a fresh motor for your build then yes, go get a motor and start with that. Its a ton more work than you think, so start with the heart of your project, the motor.

Well if you got all your spec's down to a T and know what you want it really doesnt matter where you start as long as you get there. money will also be your best friend on this mission.

Spend the money on coke and hookers, a lot less trouble.

You can't build an engine or turbo kit if you don't know what you are starting with or what you want to end with. That would be just like buying car insurance and not having a car to drive. Your best bet is to SEARCH and actually RESEARCH... Also, if you are coming in here asking these questions - I don't think a complete turbo build is right for your first project. You will be better off boosting a completely stock engine and learning the basics first. Whatever you choose, I will be watching for the carnage thread.

Start with a HP goal.
Pick a turbo and setup that will fit that goal.
Buy brand name parts if you want longevity.
Before buying a part, research it thoroughly. I use a 3-day waiting period as a rule of thumb.
Read as many build threads as you can that are similar to your goals. This is the best way to learn about the little kinks that we don't plan for.

Other than that, just read a ton.

Edc
Then build..
But seriously I would start small buy used parts boost whatever motor you have after that yooull have a really clear idea of what you want.
All this crap about buying the most exspensive **** first is a waste of money I mean do you go threw life buying the most exspensive items all the time? There has to be a compromise

Set your budget, decide what you want to do, plan for many months, and learn how engines work and what steps are required to build them properly with reading and learning. If you cant do that, I second the coke and hookers comment.

This right here. Figure out your budget and then double it. I'm at a point where I wish I just bought something already built but you can't even trust a lot of people these days when it comes to that. If you don't have deep pockets then forget about it.

atleast find out if anything is wrong with it, leaking fluids, cracked hoses, etc etc and then after that, the motor, and preferably (for me) a NON-LS/VTEC engine
like GSRs,and B16s

haha guys this isnt my first time building a car its just all my other builds seem like i spend stupid money on stuff thats not the most important at the time and just wanted some input on how to be more organized this time around. but thanks for the input. and im going with the underdog on this build im building a b16 but my other question was should i go with 9 something compression or higher as in 10:5 or 11:1 so its not as much as a dog while its out of boost or keep it lower?

AGAIN, it all depends on what you goals are. Since you haven't stated any, nobody can help you.

Step 1. Find your hp goal.
Step1-2. If your goals go above the stock block then build the block to meet your goals.
Step1-3. Make sure your motor is running great with no leaks.
Step 2. Look into your tuning setup. Then buy it.
Step 3. GEt injectors to match your hp goal. A lil bigger then need is also good. A fuel pump may be needed depending on goals
Step 4. Are you keep ac and ps or losing it?
Step 5. Find a turbo that will give you your power with a lil room to grow. To much room and it will lag like hell.
Step 6. Find out if you can do fab work yourself or if you need others to do it for you.
Step 7. Start getting parts. MAke a list of every part you need. Zip ties, hoses, gasket etc...
GO over it a few times and post it up. Then start buying those parts.
I always start with the hot side. Manifold, turbo, downpipe and wastegate. Test fit all these parts as you get them to make sure it all fits.
Then get oil/coolant lines.
Ic kit with bov
Then add it all together and get her tuned.
boost is fun your like it. But it does cost money to play

No.
Stock sleeves will walk and crack. Must upgrade. They normally can take 400whp.
And for street setuo id keep it around 9:1
