Is there a BETTER 3rd gear for us D-series guys. I have a D16y8. The B16 3rd gear is the enemy.

 

look at the EG SI's tranny. I think those are the shortest gears you can get for a D motor in a hydro tranny.

 

Doesn't the 5th gen EX and Si have the same manual tranny?

but when u look at the specs.. comparing to a EJ8 EX tranny..the only main difference is the 5th gear.. the EH si and del sol si tranny have a higher 5th gear
I believe there is only the SRR FDs which are 4.7 and 4.9 and these are possibly the cheapest most effective ways to increase the performance of the car.. but I do not know how reliable the FDs are http://www.srr.com.tw/index2.htm

I don't really care for 5th gear. So, basically I'm concerned about the final drive then? Which one gives me better acceleration? I may try the CX/VX 3rd as my 4th too ... but how about 3rd?

You best bet is swapping gears out of a ZC tranny. Its going to be the shortest. If you dont want to bother with the work your best bet is the 92-95 SI/EX. The EX has a longer 5th but the rest of the gears are the same as the SI.

I don't believe there are a ton of sohc hydro ZC trannies lurking around as I assume you can not use the cable gears into the hydro tranny? if I am mistaken please correct me..but best bet would be to swap in a higher FD it will change all the gearing in the tranny though u will lose a tad of top speed .. it's probably worth every penny
